I get questions every weekend about stocking manga. While there’s no manga section in the bookshop at the moment, I’ll be working on creating such a shelf (question is - which shelf do we sacrifice?🫠).

This will happen step by step. For now, here’s a new release you can find at The Book Loft:

🪽I’m No Angel by Ai Yazawa🪽

A decade before Nana, Ai Yazawa wrote this breakthrough hit about the journey of love into adulthood.

In a brand-new high school of only first-years, Midori, a girl who gives her all, runs for a spot on the student council alongside Akira, a guy who sees things through. Once elected, they start a new legacy at the school while also falling in love.

Midori has had a crush on Akira ever since she saw him rescue an abandoned cat. She hopes to become closer to him now that they’re working together on the student council, but his heart may belong to someone else…

Later edit: Berwick people have been generous, supportive and incredibly loyal, and you will have my forever gratitude for the strong start you’ve offered the bookshop. Having reviewed more of the footage over the last few days, I am certain that they were visitors, not locals.

A police report was filed on Tuesday and yes, they did pay by card, so it should be fairly easy to identify them. My card machine provider has been informed and they are waiting for Northumbria Police to reach out and provide a case number for the personal details to be released.

The reason why I’ve not shared the footage initially is that there was a slight possibility they were locals. I didn’t want someone to recognise the parents, spread the rumour, and for the child to have to bear the stigma of their parents’ actions in the new school year. The saddest part about this situation is that I, a complete stranger, thought first about protecting her child, while she didn’t.

I’ve shared the footage now in order to repel future similar attempts. The bookshop’s grid feels tainted now somehow, as I only share exciting things coming up and hate to bring the mood down, but it was necessary. The video needs to stay here to remind people who even consider doing this that, while Berwick might be a small town, we are all passionate about what we do & we offer a welcoming environment, but we are always watching.

Back to posting only positive things from now on.🥰

Thank you all,
L x

We are thrilled to announce the Berwick stop of Rowan McCabe’s Hard Knocks UK tour. ✊

Following the release of his new book, The Door-to-Door Poet, as well as a hit programme on BBC Radio 4, Rowan McCabe returns to the stage with Hard Knocks, a show of spoken word and comedy about community and connection.

Rowan likes making a nuisance of himself with poetry. Born in South Shields, he was raised by a punk and a hippy in a council estate in Hebburn. Over the past 10 years he’s been poet in residence in a pizza takeaway, in William Wordsworth’s childhood home and, once, on a miniature steam train. He’s also the world’s first Door-to-Door Poet and in 2019 he travelled across England, knocking on strangers’ doors and writing bespoke verses for them, for free, on any subject of their choosing. It’s a project that’s been featured in the Guardian and on BBC Breakfast.

✊Hard Knocks is a collection of all new material that lifts the lid on some of the most funny and challenging moments of this unconventional career path. Expect stories of mistaken identity, odes to rebellious snails, and ruminations on time travelling public officials, all delivered with Rowan’s trademark warmth and wit.

Tickets are available for sale on The Book Loft website. Check the link in bio!

It’s time to announce our next author event, and it is the gothic historical mystery of the summer!

Spend an evening of myth and mystery with Amanda Block & us at The Straw Yard. Weaving together a story of writers, artists and ghosts, The Haunting of Hero’s Bay is Amanda’s latest novel, journeying between past and present to uncover the shadowy secrets of a seaside smuggling community. This is the perfect atmospheric read to send chills down your spine this summer.

🩸The past will pull you under🩸

1840: As a vast ship loses its way in the night-time mist, shattering against the cliffs of Crescombe, North Devon, a daring young artist dives into the murky sea. But it’s not for heroism he is risking it all: something – or someone – is drawing him into those dark, perilous waters . . .
Now: When Finley arrives in Crescombe for the summer, he suspects he’s not alone in his attic bedroom. Before long, he is uncovering secrets the remote seaside town has kept for almost two centuries: about ghosts and curses, about a ruthless old smuggling family, and about the young women whose bodies have washed up along the town’s rocky shoreline, just below his porthole window.

Yet the more Finley learns, the closer he’s bonded to those who have gone before him – and the closer he comes to meeting the same watery end…

Amanda will be in conversation with Jackie Kaines Lang, followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Tickets can be booked via the websites of The Book Loft or The Straw Yard.
