Zinnias seem to be really enjoying the heatwave in the polytunnel here at Pembridge Farm Flowers.

Do you know how to tell if they are ready to be cut?
If the stem wiggles or flops from side to side it’s not ready to pick - leave it for another day.

If it stands tall, firm and not bendy that’s the one to pick today.

Farming in the intense heat.. it’s been a pretty challenging week with very early starts to work with both livestock and flowers in the cooler part of the day.
There are flowers and new crops coming to flower but I think some of those will go over quickly in the intense heat.
Next week we will be able to assess things more clearly as hopefully we return to a more seasonal norm but is this very high heat to become our new norm?

Out of office…

Cornflowers…

There are another filler flower of the May/June time. They are a little bit of a marmite flower, love them or hate them?

I know that some growers find them fiddly and annoying to cut. They also need regularly cut, daily ideally to keep them flowering well.

They come in a range of colours aside from the well know blue. I love the dark maroon ones, they make a super contrast at this time of year.

If you sow them in the Autumn and over winter them outside, they are really tough, they will reward you with stronger, longer stems than those planted in the spring.

May is full of beautiful flowers and I thought I would do a little series of some of my favourite filler flowers. Not the shoe stoppers we all know like peonies, roses, irises but the unsung hero’s.

Starting with Hersperis or Sweet Rocket.

It’s a biennial so sown in early June for the following year. It’s comes in purple, white and pale lilac. It’s planted out in August/September and then it over winters outside through all weathers and then sends up these amazing clouds of scented flowers.

It has long, strong stems with a collection of small flowers at the top.

Every year I forget until it arrives how much I love it and enjoy using it in all our floristry work.

Last weekend we did the first wedding flowers of the 2026 season.

The brief was for light coloured spring flowers with a hint of purple.

The flowers we used included tulips cream and apricot parrots, ranunculus, narcissi, bluebells, eucalyptus, white broom and Leucojum.

It was absolutely lovely to be back working on beautiful flowers for such lovely couples. I’m looking forward to all the other weddings this season.

Welcome to Spring at Pembridge Farm Flowers. We are growing flowers on our mixed Livestock farm in the Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire border.

Alongside the flowers we run a flock of approx 650 ewes and 60 beef cattle. We are just coming towards the last 150 in this years lambing which is superb!

We started picking flowers here on the field a couple of weeks ago beginning with the scented narcissi and anemones. We are now picking an array of tulips and ranunculus.

Waiting in the wings to follow along are the biannuals Sweet William, Sweet rocket, foxgloves, and sweet peas.

We grow using as little pesticides as possible and use farm manure to enhance the beds which are naturally on very heavy clay soil.

Our flowers are used to make bouquets, bunches, wedding & event flowers, and farewell flowers.
