Local crafters collective for North Devon and Torridge, online shop opening 2024 La Maison is a family run business situated in the heart of Bideford, Devon.

La Maison was opened in March 2006 by two local sisters Teresa and Judith, who between them decided to start a new venture and and open a home accessories and quality gift shop. The shop is now owned by Sharon and Julie- an Auntie and Niece duo. Alongside them, their children (cousins Shaun and Georgina) work in the shop. Leading up from the Quay and the river you will find many narrow back street

s which harbour an array of individual and independent shops. Take a stroll through Mill Street and come and say hello! The shop is now a well established business with a loyal following of customers who eagerly wait for the ever changing seasonal products to appear in the shop. We pride ourselves on our eyecatching window displays and eclectic range of products including Cath Kidston, East of India and beautiful jewellery by Carrie Elspeth to name but a few. We try to source unique, individual and local products that are aesthetically pleasing and are fairly priced.

Hi everyone, how are you all?
La Maison will be returning online in 2024

Work was originally going to commence on a new logo and website from Saturday 27 April

I'm now a care support worker in Penzance and Hayle areas and am working over 12 hours on the 27th

As a result, work will now commence from Wednesday 1 May onwards as I have a few days off from the 1st

Looking forward to rebuilding the business again, watch this space for more updates later this year

5 months from today, work will commence on creating a new website and online shop

From Saturday 27 April 2024, my first task will be to have a new logo image created, not very different from the image you can see below

I have a graphic designer already in place, who's also a crafter, who is ready to go in 2024

Also, a new Instagram page will be created on the above date, hence why the current page has had little use

I'll wish you all a Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year as this will probably be the final post here on this page for 2023

Hi everyone. I have left 13 Mill Street for the final time this morning and this is the final photo of La Maison which has occupied the same premises since March 2006

I feel it's my duty to acknowledge and thank the previous owners of La Maison who have made this such a fantastic brand during the last 17 years plus (hope they are ok with this, please message me if not and I will delete):

I, Darren, still own La Maison and all its social media which provides a promising outlook for the future

It's been sad recently having to close an institution in Bideford, it's definitely no ordinary business, but La Maison can return stronger and I hope to open a shop somewhere in North Devon in the coming years

I believe the way forward for now is to create an online shop and website for local crafters to utilise. That way, I can build up a regular clientele base which will then support a future shop in the area

Look out for La Maison online here in 2024

I have no regrets whatsoever in taking on the business and have lots of ideas for the future

Thank you, Bideford, for this amazing opportunity, I've really enjoyed my time here

Sadly, La Maison has closed permanently at
13 Mill Street as of 5pm yesterday

I will post a proper goodbye on here very soon as it also marks the end of more than 17 years at this location including previous owners

In the meantime, if you are a crafter here, can you please message me to collect your items as soon as you are able

I will contact any remaining crafters who don't see this post tomorrow, thank you

Apologies for the absence on social media

I have 2 positive stories and 1 negative:

The positives:

- I have a 5 page proposal brochure ready for a potential future Barnstaple crafters collective
(please message the La Maison fb page to request a copy if you are a crafter, I will send them out from tomorrow)

- A new private fb group for crafters will be created at midnight tonight so that they can chat to each other in the group rather than just messaging me
(thanks to one of my crafters for suggesting this, details will be revealed shortly after midnight tonight)

The negative:

I can confirm an offer has been accepted for 13 Mill Street, Bideford so, I don't know how long La Maison will continue there though I will keep you all updated here when I know anything significant

Another proposal brochure for a fashion outlet in Bideford with a crafters collective included will be created soon

It's possible that La Maison may not be trading in Bideford for a little while though I will do my best to seek another shop there soon

La Maison has always been in Bideford and I personally don't want that to change so, it's all about finding another way of making the business work in the town

Bideford's status of becoming a mecca for independent shops is a fantastic thing, not something many other towns can cheer about!

Hi everyone. I've just seen a post on Businesses of Bideford Bay mentioning that the premises is for sale. Indeed, it is

I have a break date in my lease of June 2024. I'm afraid I'm not confident of trading at this site beyond that date, the shop is not earning enough money, simple as

As a result, the landlords have also decided to put the property up for sale

It was my full intention to stay here, however, I had an average summer and sales were no higher in August than in any preceding month

La Maison itself needs to be reshaped into a different business model. This will take time and a lot needs to be looked into during the coming months

There is still possibility of a new shop in Barnstaple, however, if the current site closes, I still intend coming back to Bideford in the near future. I just purely need more custom coming into the business generally

In the meantime, please continue to support La Maison. Your support is more vital now than ever as I will try to find another site here in Bideford in the future if there is enough backing

If La Maison closes at the current site, crafters will be given plenty of notice and will be fully informed of what's happening

I've actually had a busier September here so, there's every chance of the business being saved, just not at this particular site

I will keep you all informed here if anything significant happens though La Maison will remain open for the time being

La Maison was also the first shop to stock her items, ideal with her being based in Bideford

New poster going up in the door tomorrow

La Maison will be opening later on a daily basis for the foreseeable future

I need some admin time in the mornings and may also occasionally need to go to Barnstaple for research purposes

It's easier for me to open at 11am daily rather than posting here that I'm opening at 11am on a particular day, sometimes only giving short notice if I have to go somewhere on the spur of the moment
