Baby Gabriel (now Vinnie) leaves us today. 🧸🩵🐾
Just an insight into the dapple gene: Vinnie’s owners were concerned that he might be a double dapple because of his very prominent blue eye.
Double dapple Dachshunds result from breeding two dapple-patterned Dachshunds.
The dapple pattern, also known as merle, creates a patchy, multi-coloured coat caused by a dominant gene influencing pigmentation.
When only one parent has the dapple gene, puppies may inherit a single dapple pattern, which generally does not pose health problems. However, when both parents carry the dapple gene, their puppies can inherit two copies, resulting in a double dapple pattern. This genetic combination is problematic.
•Blindness or partial blindness
•Deafness or partial deafness
•Malformed or missing eyes
•Other congenital eye defects
The dapple gene randomly lightens dark pigment (eumelanin) in the coat, creating the mottled “dapple” pattern, and can also affect the iris, causing lighter colors like blue or green.
Little Vinnie has inherited the dapple gene from his mum it is also very important to remember you can have hidden dapple especially in a solid coat colour like cream. These dogs still have the gene, meaning they can pass it on, and responsible breeders use DNA tests to identify them to avoid producing double dapples.
It’s very important when using anyone else program other than your own to make sure there is no dapple in the parents linage ..♥️🫶🏻
