🗣 VOCE BOOK OF THE WEEK

📚 TANGERINN by EMANUELA ANECHOUM, trans. from Italian 🇮🇹 by LUCY RAND, pub. by EUROPA EDITIONS

✒️ ‘…Mina is thirty years old and leads a life in London built with great care but little spontaneity. One evening she receives a phone call from her mother. Her father is dead. After returning home for the funeral, Mina ends up staying.

Home is a small seaside town, where her Moroccan father ran a beach bar frequented mostly by migrants; a place of refuge for those who felt unwelcome in this new land. It’s here, in a place where people appear like ghosts who pass and vanish, that Mina connects with her family and rediscovers memories of her father, that mythical, elusive migrant with a mysterious past. Surrounded by the sea, Mina will find that roots are a fleeting dream—a desire to find a common history that will allow her to forget, at least at times, the wounds of abandonment...?’

🗣️ LET THERE BE LIGHT! (AND BOOKS…!)

📚 If you have paid Voce a visit over the last three weeks, you will have noticed that things have been a little darker than usual, with scaffolding covering the shutters that open on to Allison Street while key works have been taking place to the building’s roof..

But as of this morning, we are back to full beam, with light streaming in through the windows & illuminating the shop once again. With such a small space, it is these details that bring life to the place beyond the books we put on the shelves, & it feels very special to feel the Spring sun once more during opening hours.

We’re here till 3pm as our Sunday standard, with some incredible new books having dropped in the last few days including our current Book of the Week, the continuation of Solve B***e’s time-loop masterpiece ON THE CALCULATION OF VOLUME.

If you’re in town, do drop by & check us out! You won’t miss us now we’re visible once again…!

BALSAM KARAM:
EVENT HORIZON

in conversation with Maria Lomunno Judd

📚 We are thrilled to welcome Swedish-Kurdish author BALSAM KARAM back to Voce Books for an evening of conversation around her newly translated Fitzcarraldo Editions book EVENT HORIZON following a young girl presented with an unprecedented, existential decision: public ex*****on for crimes committed against the state, or participation in an experimental mission taking her deep into space?

‘Language is at the heart of The Singularity, moving as it does from chaos and cacophony to the simple purity of a single voice, which is one measure of its brilliance and its beauty...’ JOHN SELF, THE OBSERVER on THE SINGULARITY

BALSAM KARAM is of Kurdish ancestry and has lived in Sweden since she was a young child. She is an author, librarian and university lecturer, and made her literary debut in 2018 with the critically acclaimed ‘Event Horizon’, which was shortlisted for the Katapult Prize. ‘The Singularity’ was shortlisted for the August Prize and is her first English-language publication.

This is one of our BORDERLESS events where we foreground world literature in translation, & welcome authors from across the world to discuss their work, often alongside their translators.

🗣 VOCE BOOK OF THE WEEK

📚 ON THE CALCULATION OF VOLUME IV by SOLVE B***E, trans. from Danish 🇩🇰 by SOPHIA HERSI-SMITH & JENIFFER RUSSELL, pub. by FABER

✒️ ‘…It feels as though we have each been walking along our own path in the same forest. And now, we have found our way to a clearing and suddenly we see that we share not only the clearing but the forest too. You think it begins when you meet, but in fact, our stories were already entwined.

The fourth volume of the poetic, page-turning and International Booker shortlisted masterpiece about a woman’s fall through the cracks of time. Tara Selter has found a new home. In a sprawling villa on the outskirts of Bremen, Tara Selter is starting to settle into a new kind of eighteenth of November.

Her days with Henry, Ralf and Olga revolve around the daily routines of practical chores: gathering provisions, splitting firewood. But one morning, there are five new arrivals at their wrought-iron gate. As more people continue to arrive, their home fills with movement, voices fill the air; a flurry of people asking questions, sharing their eighteenths of November.

Slowly, they settle into a new routine and Tara begins to breathe a little easier. Could they create a new world inside the eighteenth of November...?’
