So much of what we own now exists on a screen. Banking, savings, investments, pensions, payments, most of it is managed through apps, logins and online accounts.

And while that has made life much more convenient, it also explains why physical assets still appeal to so many people.

Gold and silver - you can hold them. Store them. Gift them. Pass them down. They are not just numbers on a screen or figures in an online account.

For some people, that tangibility is part of the appeal.

Precious metals are often considered as one part of a wider portfolio, not instead of everything else, but alongside other assets as something physical, recognisable and real.

In an increasingly digital world, there is still something reassuring about owning something you can actually hold in your hand.

Do you think physical assets feel more important now than they used to?

Most people focus on the gold price, but when you are buying physical bullion, the premium is where a lot of the real comparison happens.

Two coins can contain the same amount of metal but still carry different prices. That can come down to the mint, demand, condition, availability, collectability, production costs, or simply how widely recognised the product is.

For newer buyers, the premium can feel like a hidden extra.

For more experienced stackers, it becomes part of the decision-making process.

Are you buying mainly for metal content?
Are you choosing a recognised coin for future resale?
Are you happy to pay more for a certain design, year, or mint?
Or are you simply looking for the lowest premium possible?

There is no single answer that suits every buyer, but understanding the premium is an important part of understanding bullion properly.

It is not always about finding the cheapest product.

It is about knowing what you are paying for.

Where do you stand on premiums? Lowest possible, or happy to pay more for the right product?

4 x ¼ oz gold coins or 1 x 1oz gold coin - what’s the difference?

Both options contain the same total amount of gold, but they offer different benefits.

Fractional gold coins can give more flexibility, as you can sell or gift one smaller coin at a time. The trade-off is that smaller coins often carry a higher premium per ounce.

A 1oz gold coin is simple, recognised, and can sometimes offer better value in terms of premium per ounce. The trade-off is that it is less divisible.

Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, it depends on whether flexibility or simplicity matters more to you.
