The Office for Product Safety and Standards and the Department for Business and Trade have opened a 12-week national consultation entitled Fireworks and pyrotechnics in the UK. It closes at 11:59pm on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
The consultation proposes potentially significant changes, including reducing the maximum permitted noise level of consumer fireworks and restricting the products that may be made available to the public.
If implemented without sufficient evidence or a workable transition, these proposals could have serious consequences for the UK’s legitimate fireworks industry. They could substantially reduce the range of consumer fireworks available, affect the viability of specialist retailers and wholesalers, and undermine family, community, charitable and cultural celebrations.
We recognise the genuine concerns surrounding noise, animals, vulnerable people, safety and antisocial behaviour. However, responsible consumers and legitimate businesses should not be penalised for the actions of those who sell illegally or deliberately misuse fireworks.
The British Fireworks Association is preparing a detailed, evidence-led response and engaging with government, parliamentarians, retailers, event organisers and community and cultural organisations.
However, the BFA’s response alone will not be enough. The Government also needs to hear genuine individual experiences from businesses and members of the public.

The tool explains the consultation questions in straightforward language and helps retailers, consumers and community organisers prepare clear, effective and individual responses. It does not submit a standard or copied response: everyone should describe their own views and experiences.
Fireworks have brought families and communities together for generations. They form an important part of Bonfire Night, Diwali, Chinese New Year, New Year’s Eve and many other community, charitable and cultural celebrations.
We now need everyone who values safe, legal and responsible fireworks to make their voice heard.
