Glorious Twelfth

On 12th August 1773, the authorities in Britain first imposed, under The Game Act of that year, a defined season for grouse shooting. By protecting the birds during the breeding season, Parliament hoped to help sustain healthy levels of game and prevent over hunting. It was an early recognition that, in order to assure the continuity of the sport, conservation measures had to be taken to preserve the quarry.

Westley Richards at the Scottish and English Game Fairs - 2026

The tradition of a gathering of the clans in some field adjacent to a stately pile somewhere in Britain has long been a highlight of the summer. It is somewhat ironic in the current climate of drought, parched fields and rivers depleted to a trickle after months without meaningful rain, to recall that the sad fate of the original CLA Game Fair was sealed by successive floods, which literally washed the event off the land two years in three.

The New Loden Shooting Collection at Palé Hall

Westley Richards photographed its new Loden Shooting Collection at Palé Hall in North Wales, where sporting tradition and natural beauty blends with refined hospitality. It provided the ideal setting in which to capture the range alongside genuine shooters whose own appreciation for country pursuits brought an added authenticity to the collection.

Westley Richards Decades - the 1820s

One musty old tome, now much degraded and disheveled remains on the shelf at Pritchett Street, very much looking its 202 years of age. Over two centuries; that is worth a moment to contemplate. The hand that put quill to ink pot and then carefully recorded sales details every day in the Westley Richards shop in 1824 would have done so in a world whose inhabitants could not have, in their wildest dreams, imagined the one in which we live today.

The .410: A Bespoke Small-Bore Game Gun

The historical background of the .410 shotgun would not have made it an obvious choice as a serious game gun to Victorian eyes. However, modern shooters of small game birds have become very attracted to it. This beautiful, dainty, best-quality, Westley Richards ‘drop-lock’, with dimensions perfectly suited to the modern adult male is, perhaps, the highest form of the calibre currently available to buy. The term ‘calibre’ used here is correct. If expressed in ‘bore’, the .410 is actually a 67 ½-bore but nobody says that! For many years it was incorrectly marketed as a 36-bore, which it isn’t.

Celebrating Young Craftspeople

Much is made today of uncertain futures, changing technologies and the challenges facing young people at the start of their working lives. Yet the British gun trade, now almost three centuries old, and the leather industry, older still, have shown remarkable resilience. For those entering these worlds with skill, dedication and ambition, they continue to offer deeply rewarding careers.

A Rare 7x57 Double Rifle

The 7mm Ma**er cartridge (also known as the 7x57 or the .275 Rigby) has seen a rise in appreciation over the last fifteen years or so. We usually find it chambered in a magazine rifle. So, this stunning new Westley Richards double is somewhat surprising.

The Limited Edition Elephant Grey Suede Collection

A full year of testing has led to the release of the latest limited edition of two Westley Richards classics: the Bishop Bag and the Explora Rucksack in elephant-grey suede. Following on from the success of the walnut suede edition we launched in 2024, it was time for a new release. We found a close-grain, beautiful-quality elephant grey suede but before embarking on a production run, decided to test it by making a prototype Explora Rucksack and using it every day for a year.
