Visit the YACreates Studio during this year's Birmingham Open Studios CIC event, Birmingham’s largest art trail.

My work alongside that of the amazing artist Mahnoor Saparas | Artist, will be on display and available to sell across both weekends of 26/27 Sept and 3/4 Oct.

We will also be joined by Ayan Mahamud on Oct 3rd.

The Birmingham Open Studios app is now available to download from Apple and Play stores.
This handy tool provides a map and listings of all 161 participants across 84 venues, and will help you plan and navigate the studios you would like to visit.
As per the screenshot we are listed as 19b and 19c on the app, you can also visit our lovely neighbours Courtyardworkshop listed as 19a 👌🏾

Africa Continent Mirror

Mirror acrylic lasercut in the shape of the African continent.

Mirror acrylic is lighter, has high impact resistance and is safer than glass.

Throwback to 10 years ago today when I lasercut and installed four branded back drops for an event in one of the Wembley power league venues.

Having only had my laser machine for 18 months and being self taught, I naively believed the commission would be easy. But it ended up super challenging as all the fabrics I found in the brand colour where not laserable. Through this project I learnt you can't just lasercut any fabric and had to find a workaround or two.

With research and cautiously testing different fabrics, (without burning the place down, cause there were a few little fires 🔥😅 ) I found the right fabric to laser the logo but it didn't come in the brand colour which was purple🤦🏾‍♀️ Workaround one worked but the brand colour still needed to be incorporated so I added an interchangeable background fabric (super flammable and definitely not laserablre lool) , which finalised the piece nicely.

These workarounds resulted in the development of a whole new idea💡. The layered backdrop made it possible for the client to change the logo colour as and when they pleased, by simply changing the background fabric, which was an added bonus👍🏾

After all that I tested how the backdrops would be hung and installed to give a professional finish, which I did in my studio first before installing in the venue (third slide).

This was one of my first explorations of lasercutting fabric, as opposed to solid materials such as acrylic, MDF and wood, and thankfully I pulled it off 🙌🏾

All set up for a lunch time jewellery making session for the children and young people taking part in Design and construction club today, Wednesday and Thursday.

As the aim is to keep them off their phones during their lunch break, beaded jewellery making, bell boating and football have been organised to achieve this aim👍🏾😀

As a long adopted Jamaican/Caribbean, and Birmingham born Nigerian bab, I'm proud to be trading my Places & Pieces products at this year's Simmer Down Festival 🥳🥳

This will be my first time trading at a festival of such magnitude and I'm looking forward to the experience 😅

I will be showcasing map puzzles, which you can try out aswell as framed maps, coasters and phone stands all of which can be bought or ordered on the day.
