147 years ago today, history was made right here in the city centre. 💡

On 3rd February 1879, Sir Joseph Swan stood before a packed audience at the Literary and Philosophical Society (Lit & Phil) and did something that looked like magic.

He turned off the gas lamps and switched on the first practical incandescent lightbulb.

While Thomas Edison was still experimenting with prototypes in America, Swan was effectively illuminating a room in Newcastle with a steady, glowing electric light.

That lecture made the Lit & Phil the first public building in the world to be lit by electric light, kicking off the modern age we live in today.

So, the next time you flip a light switch at home, remember: it all started in a library in Newcastle.
