The 15th September is Agatha Christie’s birthday! In celebration, our Poetry Pharmacists in York had a go at prescribing poetical poisons to Agatha Christie Archetypes.

These poetical toxins have been expertly distilled to ail the most inhumane of emotional ailments, and who knows, they may have prevented a murder or two in the Christie universe!

Why not join us in celebrating Agatha’s birthday with a copy of Cathy Rentzenbrink The Agatha Christie Cure — available now in the shop and online!

We’re delighted to be celebrating the launch of The Agatha Christie Cure by Cathy Rentzenbrink (Cathy Rentzenbrink) alongside our brand-new Poetry Prescription, The Reading Cure.

The Agatha Christie Cure is a literary detective story and memoir about finding comfort, companionship and hope in the books we love. Cathy Rentzenbrink returns to her lifelong love of Agatha Christie, exploring how reading can help us through difficult times, making it the perfect tonic for anyone in search of life-affirming resilience.

And to accompany it, we’ve created The Reading Cure Poetry Prescription: a restorative dose of words for anyone in need of comfort and escape. Prescribed for tired minds, difficult days, bouts of loneliness and those occasions when the world is simply too much and it may be advisable to disappear into a book for a while.

Swipe to see our bookseller, Carris open a poem from The Reading Cure bottle!

The Agatha Christie Cure and The Reading Cure Poetry Pills are available individually or together as a bundle on our website, and in our York and Bishops Castle bookshops now!

A poetic prescription for finding your place.

Our Tongue Depressor Bookmarks are inspired by one of Deb’s favourite possessions, an original Boots Book-Lovers’ Library bookmark from 1943, and by the simple tongue depressors once found in the doctor’s bag.

We’ve reimagined them into these translucent, double-sided bookmarks carrying a small prescription of poetry.

Choose from prescriptions including For Rainy Days and For Wandering the City Alone.

A small gift for readers, walkers, wanderers and the poetically indisposed.

For best results: insert between the pages of a good book and administer poetry as required.

We did the maths and we surprised ourselves!

By the end of 2026, Poetry Pharmacy will have hosted more than 90 events in just one year - so many wonderful workshops and literary gatherings across Bishop’s Castle, York, London and online.

That’s not really an events programme any more, it’s more like a year-round poetry festival.

Except there’s no festival funding. No dedicated events team. No marketing department.

Just our very (very) small Poetry Pharmacy team, our spaces, a lot of goodwill, and a wonderful community of poets, writers, publishers, partners and audiences who keep wanting to work with us.

There have been readings and launches, workshops and open mics, children’s poetry clubs and book groups, poetry walks, creative socials, poetry breakfasts and regular community gatherings, and our resident typewriter poet. Some are big, some tiny, some free. One involved spending the entire night in our BC bookshop in pyjamas.

And there’s a very simple way to help us keep all this happening.

Buy your books and your essential poetry meds from us. Think about us for your gift buying.

Everything bought through our website or our bookshop.org page supports an independent bookseller and helps us keep making space for poetry, for writers and for people to come together around words.

Thank you so much for everything you do to keep this mad idea going! If you love us, buy something! Thank you.

Love Deb & all the PP Team x

We’re delighted with our new window art at Poetry Pharmacy York, created to celebrate the launch of ‘The Agatha Christie Cure’ by Cathy Rentzenbrink, alongside our brand-new Poetry Prescription, The Reading Cure. 🔍📚
Thanks so much to Caitlin for the wonderful work and

In ‘The Agatha Christie Cure’, Cathy returns to the books she has loved since childhood, finding in Agatha Christie’s stories a source of comfort, companionship and escape during a difficult time in her life. It’s a beautiful reflection on the restorative power of reading, and on the books we return to when we need them most.

A poetic companion to Cathy’s book, The Reading Cure is a restorative dose of words for readers in need of comfort, escape and the particular consolation of a good book.

Each of the 13 capsules contains a carefully selected literary extract celebrating the pleasures of reading: books as refuge, adventure, companionship, rebellion and escape. Featuring words from Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, Marcel Proust, Dylan Thomas, Cathy Rentzenbrink and others.

Prescribed for Literary Diversion; to alleviate Mental Fatigue & for the Restoration of Curiosity.

For best results: Take with a comfortable chair, a locked door, a long journey or, in the spirit of The Agatha Christie Cure, a hot bath and a very good book.

The Agatha Christie Cure and The Reading Cure Poetry Pills are available individually or together as a bundle on our website now, and coming to our shops very soon.

Come and see the window at Poetry Pharmacy York and discover the book and its poetic prescription. 💊📖
