On this day 78 years ago Blackpool played Manchester United in an FA Cup Final remembered as one of the best displays of football witnessed at Wembley Stadium.

The two sides played to win and Blackpool took the lead from the penalty spot with Eddie Shimwell blasting home before a mix up in defence allowed United to equalise.
Stan Mortensen scored to regain the lead, a goal that saw him score in every round of the competition.

At half time with the Seasiders 2-1 up their famous ‘Atomic Boys’ were creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Until the 70th minute the ‘Pool looked to be on their way to their first FA Cup final victory until the referee gave a hand ball against them and from the free kick another error saw United level the score.

From then on it was the Reds (playing in Blue to avoid a kit clash, Blackpool played in White) who dominated.

A long ball upfield found Pearson 25 yards out who lashed United in front before the same man put the game to bed making the final score 2-4.

On this day, 21st February 1987 the Seasiders returned to winning ways with an emphatic 6-1 victory at home to Bristol Rovers.

Tricky winger Mark Taylor opened the floodgates, scoring the first of two before Mike Davies, Craig Madden on his home debut and a brace from Paul Stewart completed the rout.

It seems inconceivable that a team with such prolific firepower didn’t manage to gain promotion but the sales of top players Alex Dyer to Hull City and Stewart to Manchester City put paid to those aspirations.

Rovers managed by the incomparable Bobby Gould featured future England defender John Scales and mustachiod notables, Kenny Hibbet and Gary Penrice.

The Seasiders would finish 9th that season.

The FA Cup ain’t what it used to be but Blackpool FC will always be intrinsically linked to the old trophy.

For 5 years the Seasiders made the trip to Wembley three times playing in arguably the greatest football spectacle in 1948 against Manchester United, fluffing their lines in 1951 against Newcastle United before winning the most famous final of all in 1953.

Atomic Boys, Hat-Tricks, comebacks and finally a winners medal for the most popular footballer of his generation.

Another wet and windswept Sunday morning stroll along the prom, another little gem of a find.

Fenton Grove is a little nook just off Seasiders Way. Named after another hero of the famous 1953 Cup final and a hugely respected manager in Irish football.

Born in Dundee the young Ewan Fenton played for Lochee Harp before joining the Seasiders at the age of 17 in 1946 and made his debut less than 2 years later.

As understudy to the legendary Harry Johnson the ball playing right half was always going to struggle to establish himself but worked hard in the reserves and his perseverance and intelligent passing ability led to a strong run in the first team and guaranteed his place in the final.

His link with Ernie Taylor and Stanley Matthews created a triumvirate almost as magically lethal as the Bermuda Triangle .
Indeed it was this combination that fashioned the match winning goal that Matthews centred and Perry buried.

Fenton would remain a key player for the Seasiders for several years. Calm, cultured and composed he would earn the captaincy of the club and became a regular penalty taker.

After more than 200 appearances and 20 goals he joined Wrexham but not before scoring on his final appearance for the Tangerines in 1959.

Following that spell in Wales the Scot moved to Limerick in Ireland as player/manager where the second half of his career began.

He played in a European Cup tie and won trophies and titles as manager for both Limerick and Linfield.

He brought through countless talented players and
his knowledge and demeanour led him to become a highly respected figure in the game.

Outside of football he opened a very successful driving school.

In 2006 he passed away at the age of 76 in Limerick, the city he called home for over 40 years.

So if you ever see Fenton Grove, hopefully you will know a little bit more about it true great who’s influence touched ievery part of the British isles.
