For those who might not know, we’ve been working alongside St Fagans National Museum of History for many years, with our restoration and bespoke conversion work featured in several of their historic exhibits.

We’ve just collected a couple of new pieces for the extension to the famous Vulcan Hotel:

Lamp #1: A full electrical conversion of an original brass gas lamp.

Lamp #2: A rework of a unit we built for them two years ago—this time modifying the length to suit the new space.

Once the electrical conversions and structural modifications are completed, the final step will be hand-ageing the brass components so they seamlessly match the period look of the exhibit rather than looking brand new.

This tiny Appella travel clock arrived at our Blackwood High Street workshop back in May, and it’s been a true labour of love ever since. (Rest assured, it wasn't the only project on the bench!) We kept in close contact with the client throughout, and they were more than happy to wait while we got it just right.

It certainly presented a few challenges—the primary hurdle being a snapped mainspring. With a fresh spring fitted, the movement is now ticking away reliably and keeping excellent time. It then underwent meticulous cleaning and hand-polishing to bring that solid brass case back to its original lustre.

A Little History & Context:

Appella was founded in Porrentruy, Switzerland, in 1943 by horologist Paul Glocker (EBOSA group). Based on the styling, compact brass casing, and date window complication, this piece was purchased by our customer in 1961 and its now good for another 65 years use.

Vintage Swiss APPELLA travel clocks of this quality, fully restored, typically fetch between £80 and £250 but as in this case, hold stronger sentimental and practical value.

**Before or After: What do you think of this restoration?** 👇

This vintage beauty was brought into the **Repaireum Blackwood High Street Workshop** in dire need of an overhaul! Its original electric workings had been completely removed about 10 years ago, leaving it in a right state.

We went all-out to bring it back to life:

* ** Custom Clock Face: **
Recreated and hand-crafted a brand-new face to showcase on top, while carefully preserving the original face underneath.
* ** Bodywork & Colour Match: **
Repaired the bodywork damage and resprayed it in a custom finish, perfectly colour-matched to its original green hue.
* ** Refurbished Chrome: **
Spent considerable time working out the rust and pitting before having the metalwork completely re-chromed.
* ** Modern Quartz Movement: **
Converted the clock with a reliable modern quartz mechanism.
* ** Details Matter: **
Added a dummy time-adjust dial to the bottom to retain its authentic vintage aesthetic.
* ** Upgraded Security: **
The original hanger (shown in the last couple of photos) was flawed—it allowed the clock to slide right off! We fabricated and installed a new, secure keyhole hanger so it stays firmly on the wall.

This model was manufactured by **The E. Ingraham Company** in Bristol, Connecticut, USA. Originally founded in 1831 by cabinetmaker Elias Ingraham, the company became one of the world's premier timepiece manufacturers. Mid-century Streamline Moderne and Art Deco wall/mantel clocks like this one were produced extensively by Ingraham from the 1930s through to the late 1940s, showcasing their iconic pressed-metal and early synthetic casing designs.

A fresh lease of life for this Bridewell Clocks piece at our Blackwood High Street workshop.

It arrived with heavily rusted hands and a non-responsive quartz movement. The restoration process involved:

Movement replacement: Swapped the faulty quartz mechanism for a reliable new movement.

Hand restoration: Replaced the corroded hands with period-appropriate ornate replacements.

Timber care: Thoroughly cleaned the casing and applied a natural wax finish to feed the timber and highlight the grain.

On the Bench at Repaireum: Pre-WWII Art Deco Ingraham Clock

Here’s a brilliant new project that’s just landed on the workbench — a late 1930s to early 1940s wall clock made by The E. Ingraham Company in Bristol, Connecticut.

Featuring a classic Streamline Moderne sage green case, chrome accents, and iconic Art Deco typography, this piece originally ran on a mains synchronous electric motor. The plan for this one is a complete restoration and a clean conversion to a reliable battery quartz movement, preserving all of its original vintage character while making it practical for modern home use.

This festive hound is back to howling and dancing in full motion! 🎄🐶

When this little chap arrived, his internal gears were completely worn out, leaving him singing without any of the moves. We stripped the unit down, isolated the faulty gears, hand-crafted custom replacements to fit, and added some fresh padding to get him feeling like new again.

Dating back to circa 2008–2012, this animated plush was well worth saving. It goes to show that whether it's vintage, mechanical, or sentimental, we can restore and repair practically anything right here in our little Blackwood High Street shop!
