Whiskers aren’t just cute! 🥹🐴

Those whiskers around a horse’s muzzle and eyes are specialised sensory hairs called vibrissae.

They provide useful sensory information about objects close to the face — particularly useful when the horse can’t see something directly beneath its nose.

💙 Tiny hairs doing a very important job!

Horses produce A LOT of saliva! 🤤🐴

When they’re eating and chewing, horses can produce many litres of saliva over a day.

And here’s the interesting part: unlike us, saliva production in horses is strongly stimulated by chewing.

Another reason why plenty of appropriate forage and chewing time matter. 🌱

Imagine having to clean THAT amount of slobber up! 😂

Why are horses’ pupils sideways? 👀

Take a close look and you’ll notice a horse’s pupils are long and horizontal rather than round like ours.

That shape helps give grazing animals a wide view of their surroundings — very handy when your ancestors needed to eat AND keep watch for danger!

🐴 Now you’ll be staring at their eyes next time you’re on the yard! 😂

Those weird patches on their legs have a name! 🐴

They’re called CHESTNUTS!

Those rough, hardened patches found on the inside of horses’ legs are completely normal keratinised structures — and their size and shape can vary between horses.

Next time you’re at the yard, you’ll know exactly what you’re looking at! 👀

How many of you already knew what they were called?

Horse sweat is pretty clever! 💦🐴

Horse sweat contains a protein called latherin, which helps the sweat spread through their coat.

It’s also one of the reasons you can sometimes see that familiar white foam appearing when a horse gets sweaty during exercise.

🐎💦 Every day’s a school day!

Horses can dream! 💤💭🐴

Horses experience different stages of sleep, including REM sleep, which is associated with dreaming.

And although horses can doze standing up, they generally need to lie down to get proper REM sleep.

So that horse you see completely flat-out in the field may simply be enjoying a VERY good snooze! 😂

What do you reckon horses dream about? 💭🥕

THAT TAIL ISN’T JUST PRETTY 🪰

A horse’s tail is a brilliant natural fly swatter.

They use it to flick away irritating insects from their body.

Although occasionally it is also used to…

💥 Smack their human directly across the face.

Usually when you’re concentrating on picking out a back hoof. 😂

HORSES CAN SNOOZE A LOT… IN LITTLE BITS 😴

Horses don’t usually sleep in one big eight-hour block like humans.

Instead, they tend to sleep and doze in shorter periods throughout the day and night.

Honestly…

They’ve basically mastered the power nap. 😂

HORSES HAVE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS 😒😂

Research has shown that horses use a wide range of facial movements to communicate.

Horse owners didn’t need research.

We already know these ones:

👀 “Where’s my dinner?”
😒 “You’re riding ME?”
😱 “WHAT IS THAT?!”
🥹 “Got any treats?”

What face does your horse pull most often?
