A quirky definitive to Holyhead Mountain by David Durkan who, in 1967 wrote the first guide to the crag. I have a small number of signed copies available, message me if you would like a one.

Holyhead Mountain Climbs on ... with Gogarth & Rhoscolyn by David Durkan, published by Swami Kailash Publications, June 2022, 59 page perfect bound paperback, W 152mm × H 229mm, £10.00 + £1.95 P+P.

‘In 1967, whilst stationed at RAF Valley, David Durkan published his first guidebook to Holyhead Mountain. Some fifty-five years later a new definitive guidebook takes a sentimental look back at David’s association and the history of the crag. This quirky fifty-nine page book describes 144 routes over fifteen sectors; a labour of love, if I have ever seen one.’ David Price.

Holyhead Mountain is one of North Wales most popular fair weather crags, and has a history that goes back to pre-Roman times. Its summit was surrounded by a Celtic fortress. Climbing began around 1955, mainly by Mountain Rescue Team members stationed at RAF Valley.

Along came a motley group of Holyhead schoolboys who, after one day climbing on the Milestone Buttress bought a rope, one sling and a screwgate carabiner. Two routes were climbed that first day, Hat and Plimsoll both graded V.Diff. David Durkan with the rest of his school hill-walking club soon established over thirty climbs. Inspired by Alan Blackshaws book Mountaineering, the then bible of climbing techniques. 'That we survived those early days is a miracle in itself’ notes the author.

The locals did not claim first ascents, feeling most lines to be so obvious that someone had probably climbed them already. However, they did name them, often in association with their first ascents which were often epic! Along came grades, lengths and descriptions. This led to Durkan’s first guidebook, Holyhead Mountain, a twelve page pamphlet published in 1967. Four years later he produced MONA, the first commercially printed guide to the mountain and an introduction to the newly discovered Rhoscolyn Cliffs. MONA also included local articles in the spirit of a club journal.

Holyhead Mountain Climbs on ..., was originally to be named Mona Revisited as the guide follows the same club journal style with articles on Gogarth and Rhoscolyn intertwined. And, a novelty in today's guidebook world, narrative on how many of the routes got their names – something Chris Bonington notes in his afterword, 'A nice twist – to a lovely little guide.'

Wow, just wow! Last week, I finally made the effort to visit Liverpool Central Library. It was a great pleasure and the building itself is sensational. An outrageous combination of the old and new architecture which complements beautifully. The library has a good selection of climbing and mountaineering narratives and guidebooks. I highly recommend a visit!
