We promote fair trade in the community across Greater Manchester and Lancashire from our shop and at events, stalls and talks in schools and churches The company exists to promote the idea of trade justice through practical application. The day-to-day running of the shop is in the hands of two managers appointed by the Board, assisted by relief supervisors and a team of dedicated volunteers. We su

pply goods on a sale-or-return basis to people willing to carry fair trade into other organisations such as faith groups, schools and community groups. We will also run stalls and supply speakers for events which promote fair trade. We are a founder member of BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops, and use their list of accredited fair trade suppliers. BAFTS criteria go beyond fair prices to include social and environmental considerations and gender equality. For more information on BAFTS see www.bafts.org.uk. BAFTS membership enables the shop to stock a wide range of fairly traded goods that are not at present eligible for the fairtrade mark, such as many foodstuffs, jewellery, ornaments, and musical instruments etc. We also stock household goods which are environmentally friendly, and cards and stationery produced by fair trade companies such as Traidcraft and Shared Earth. Open from 10.00am to 3.30pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and longer hours in the run up to Christmas.

Cats have been living with humans for around 12,000 years and many of us humans are happy to act as staff to an adorable bundle of fur, claws, teeth and big eyes. Today is International Cat Day and we feel it's time to introduce you to our manager Joanna's furry friend Jet. Jet is jet black from head to toe and going through her stroppy teenager phase having turned one year old in June. She loves her little doughnut toy which she carries around in her mouth. Her favourite fair trade product is a sheep Christmas decoration from Namaste and she likes to make sure her cat litter is recycled and eco friendly.

Cats are one of our most popular animals in the shop and you will find wooden and fabric versions in lots of different products. Our best selling cat product is our brightly coloured mini wooden cats at £2 - you can put your rings on their tail or just enjoy having them around. Our "desk buddy" cats are designed to sit on a shelf and look down on you (many cat owners will recognise this stance) and our range of Earth Squared tweed purses and bags features sweet and friendly cats

So happy International Cat Day to all our feline friends and we'd love to see your cats - so drop a pic in the comments!

The symbol of Manchester is the Bee - there's one on the top of Manchester Town Hall and on everything from bollards to buses. It symbolises the city's industrial history with millions of hard working people striving together in mills, factories and shops building the wealth of the city and the region over the past two centuries

Bolton is one of the ten Greater Manchester boroughs and Justicia is proud to stock the biggest range of fair trade products in the region. We work closely with fair trade campaigners from the other boroughs as part of the Greater Manchester Fair Trade Network including the upcoming Manchester Cathedral Eco Fest on 3 October

You will find bees on many of our products and our new in store display showcases some of them, as well as our range of honeys

So buzz along to the shop Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10-3.30

We'll bee seeing you!

Eswatini - formerly known as Swaziland - is home to one of the companies who make our jams and marmalades, Black Mamba.

Here's what they say:

In essence, our focus is on paving the way for GOOD stuff in everything we do. We want to make the world a better place, one delicious bite at a time. Join us in leading the Black Mamba revolution and let's make a positive impact together, because good food, and good choices, CAN change the world!

Not much to add to that!

Did you know that almost all the world's sports balls are made in the same town in Pakistan? Sialkot is the centre of manufacturing for sports balls so any of the balls you find in play at the Commonwealth Games were almost certainly made there.

The factory where Bala sport manufactures its footballs is certified fair trade with great working conditions and an onsite co-operative shop for workers to buy low cost provisions. The balls are available in two sizes and two grades both in store and from our eBay store.

Bolton is home to a large population of first, second and third generation immigrants from Pakistan and it's fantastic to be able to offer a fair trade product made in the country.

The Indian flag features a spinning wheel because of the country's tradition of cloth and garment making. The rich muslin fabrics that were produced in India were prized and valued by European elite. During colonial times the British rulers of India undertook a wholesale programme of destroying spinning looms so that they could export raw cotton, make cheap fabric - often in the cotton mills of Lancashire near our shop in Bolton - and export it back to India. As a result both the native Indian fabric industry and the skills were lost, with Indians reduced to manual labour as cotton farmers and pickers.

Now, those skills are returning and one of our favourite Indian products draws on this tradition. Our best selling net scarves are made by women in India who are able to start a business with just four pieces of wood and a bag of nails. They make the frame pictured and weave these delicate scarves using "flag yarn" of different colours and shades. The scarves are so comfortable and wearable and at just £6 they make a great gift with a story

Ghana is one of the countries that's featured in both our World Cup and Commonwealth Games round ups - remember the World Cup group stage match where the Black Stars held England to a 0-0 draw?

If their footballers are skilled at defending, Ghana is more famous for the skills of its basket weavers. Based around Bolgatanga in the North of the country, near to the border with Burkina Faso, our Bolga baskets are woven by workers from Trade Aid Ghana, a member of the World Fair Trade Organization.

Baskets are woven from all kinds of natural and upcycled materials and the distinctive Bolga basket style gives real quality and long lasting style

Honey is one of those products that's good all round. It's one of the most ancient foodstuffs in the world with proven health benefits for your heart, digestion, respiratory system and wound healing.

Our Mama Buci honey is harvested in specially designed, locally made treetop beehives in the Miombo forest in Zambia. The bees are wild and honey has been traditionally harvested from bark hives which are damaging to the trees and fail after just a few years. The new design can produce around 12kg of honey every year and last a lifetime. All the profits are used to make and distribute more hives to families who then make money from selling the honey. So far over 70,000 families are accessing sustainable incomes from the hives.
