While collectors are very familiar with the spectacular heraldic shield on the reverse of the 1825–1829 half-crown, few realize that its complex design was directly influenced by King George IV's deep embarrassment over his actual military record.
Unlike his continental rivals, the King had never seen real combat, a fact that made him the butt of satire in British newspapers. To compensate, he obsessed over military uniforms and heraldry, heavily influencing Jean Baptiste Merlen's reverse artwork.

If you look closely at the beautiful shield design spinning in the video, it features a highly unusual addition for a standard British coin: a massive, prominent knightly tournament helmet complete with sprawling, elaborate cloth "lambrequins" (or mantling) draped over the shield.
This specific, over-the-top inclusion of medieval tournament armor was an intentional piece of personal propaganda dictated by the Palace, designed to project an aggressive image of chivalry and martial glory that the flamboyant King completely lacked in real life.

The Crown That Offended the Queen 👑



Everyone knows the 1887 Silver Jubilee Crown for its stunning reverse of St George slaying the dragon. But did you know the portrait on the other side caused an absolute scandal?

After 50 years of using her 'Young Head' portrait, Queen Victoria finally allowed an update to celebrate her Golden Jubilee. The Royal Mint turned to sculptor Joseph Edgar Boehm, but the result did not go down well.

The public openly mocked it, and Queen Victoria herself was quietly furious. Why? Because Boehm was a bit too honest. He accurately captured her 68-year-old jowls and gave her what she felt was a distinctly 'sour face'. To make matters worse, he placed a tiny crown atop her widow’s veil that critics called 'ludicrous' and argued looked like a toy precariously balancing on her head, ready to tumble off at any moment.

The design was so intensely disliked that it was scrapped just a few years later in 1893, making this brief, 'foolish' imperial blunder a fascinating piece of British numismatic history.
