Holiday hack!

Have you ever been on holiday and fallen in love with a painting but realised that there's no way you could get it home without spending a fortune?

If you're going away this summer and you find an oil or acrylic painting (or 3) that you love, you could do what this client did, and buy the canvas without the frame that it would normally be presented on.
That way you can easily bring it back, simply rolled up like a poster, and then get it stretched over a bespoke frame by a framer when you get home - or you could even do it yourself!

This is a tea towel, but not just any tea Towel. It talks to the fundamental values of the gentle man who wanted to make a hero of the piece, which originated in the late 19th / very early 20th century.

We chose to use a technique to raise the artwork (you'll see its wrapped and carefully - and reversibly - secured, around a deep board). The moulding is a lovely deep brown, echoing colours in the image. And I love that he chose a red mountboard and frame-wall lining, which matches the colours of the apples, but also speaks of the socialist movement that this is all about.

It took over 130 separate elements to create this look, for a very precious tea towel that has waited for years to be proudly displayed in my clients home, reflecting his years of professional dedication to the cause.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to do this project.

I was very excited by this client's choice of a double mount with a hand-painted inner border, with a frame matching a previous piece I did for her.
She was inspired by a sample of this technique (see pictures), saying that 'if its worth framing, it's worthy of a special technique for a unique look'. I couldn't agree more.

Before and after. What a transformation!

The brown frame was looking dated, and the cream mountboard made the Jack Vetriano print look faded & tired.

But rather than taking the whole thing to the charity shop or putting it in the attic, re-framing brought it back to life.
Changing the frame to a modern, streamlined black frame and using a bold scarlet mountboard has made it look strong, vibrant and contemporary.

'Tis the season for framed sports shirts for Christmas presents.
A more complex process than framing a canvas or print, but the challenge is half the fun of picture framing, and so satisfying when you get to put all the elements together and see the finished article.

I do love framing which is such a world away from dealing with desk-job, corporate-focused type-stuff and a real antidote to stress. You cannot hurry any part of any of the steps involved framing, and they require absolute focus and quietness. And the result is a joy you can enjoy every day and for years to come.
This is my most recent piece, which I really love. Simple and elegant, and completely in harmony with the artwork.

A large Monet print to feature in a bathroom which has brushed bronze trimmings, taps etc.
So we've chosen a slim frame which will complement both the painting and the bathroom. And the colour of the mountboard around the picture is in harmony with the sails. A peaceful and elegant presentation.
