Aperture

1. Understand aperture
The most fundamental element any photographer should understand is aperture. The aperture is the physical opening within your lens that allows light through to the sensor (or film in an older camera). The wider the aperture opening, the more light can pass through, and vice versa.

The size of the opening, which is regulated by a series of fins encroaching from the edge of the lens barrel, is measured in so-called f-stops, written f/2.8, f/5.9 and so on, with smaller numbers denoting wider apertures. If you find this inverse relationship tricky to remember, imagine instead that it relates not to the size of the hole but the amount of each fin encroaching into the opening.

A narrow opening is regulated by a large amount of each fin encroaching into the barrel, and so has a high f-stop number, such as f/16, f/18 and so on. A wide opening is characterised by a small number, such as f/3.2, with only a small amount of each fin obscuring the light.

In the meantime here is a sneak peak the soon to be confirmed Leica Mini M camera, due for launch 11 June.

The Mini M could be a micro four thirds offering from Leica, or even a more compact full-frame camera. Either way you can be sure of two things: it'll be expensive and it will be nice as anything to look at. Bring on a hopefully more affordable Leica, and its legendary glow!

Seen in prototype form at CES earlier this year, Sony has now officially unveiled its latest set of digital recording binoculars designed to give travelers, wildlife watchers and sports fans a closer view of the action.

Succeeding the DEV-3 and DEV-5 units released in 2011, the new DEV-50V binoculars boast a new waterproof design that is 30 percent smaller than its predecessors, along with higher resolution OLED eyepieces replacing the previous LCD versions.

Panasonic has added two new cameras to its 2013 line-up, the Lumix DMC-G6 and the Lumix DMC-LF1.

The G6 is a DSLR-like mid-range mirrorless shooter with a 16 megapixel sensor, while the LF1 is a high-end compact with a built-in electronic viewfinder. Both cameras also boast the Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity which featured in the recent GF6.

At first glance, the Nikon Coolpix A looks like a typical, if slightly retro, compact camera. But, it actually contains a large APS-C sensor, the same size found in most DSLRs. It also boasts a relatively speedy f/2.8 18.5-mm fixed lens, which should enable it to take photographs rivaling the quality of much bigger cameras.

As more people are turning to digital SLR's for videography due to the abundance of available lenses I thought I would share a trend which gives stunning results, by taking things one step further.

Hexacopter's, quadcopters and octocopters powerful enough to carry an SLR are at the time of writing are still a little pricey. However if like me you're still a kid at heart, the thrill of attaching your expensive camera to a glorified helicopter sounds like it worth taking the chance, then you're right. Not only is it fun but you also get the opportunity to get some very unique images and footage. From what I understand it will require one person to control the flight and a friend to control the position of the camera and take pictures.

Below I have included a video which I think gives a good demonstration of the kind content you can get with one of these setups. I particularly like this video because it features cars so it's a bit of triple whammy of my favourites, cameras, radio control and drifting, enjoy!

I've been building a new Hexacopter (6) for about 3 months now, this one is able to carry a DSLR camera. After finally getting all the bugs worked out i was ready…
