Deer Society South West Branch - Walking Stalking Event

This day is ideal for stalkers, woodland owners and deer managers who wish to learn more about the habits of deer and signs of deer impact on the countryside. This event will teach you how to conduct a Habitat Impact Assessment (HIA), there will be some classroom theory followed by practical experience in a woodland.
For land owners grants are now available to support the various aspects of deer management (FIPL/Countryside Stewardship/WS1). These all require a Deer Management Plan to be in place. Impact Assessments are an integral component of any Management Plan so this day is a great opportunity to learn about this process with a view to securing funding. As conscientious stalkers and deer managers we should all have this knowledge and be using it to monitor and inform the work we do, even if funding is not currently being sought.

10.30 -11.30 Deer impact - Fundamental Principles.
11:30 to 11:45 – Rest break
11.45 - 12.30 Recording deer activity and impact.
12:30 to 13:30 – Buffet lunch
13.30 - 15.30 Practical Deer Impact Assessment - form filling, exclosures, indicators.
