Blackwell is a beautifully preserved example of Arts & Crafts architecture with stunning stained glass windows and handcrafted features. It was designed by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott as a holiday home for the Holt family in 1898 and remains an ideal retreat into nature. The inviting window seats and garden terraces offer spectacular views of the surrounding Lakeland scenery. The period rooms are carefully furnished with a blend of Arts & Crafts furniture and contemporary handcrafted pieces. A permanent exhibition explores the Arts & Crafts Movement with a display of works by Charles Voysey and William Morris. Check our website to see what’s on at Blackwell today:

Thank you to everyone who joined us for M H Baillie Scott: In Conversation last Friday evening.

It was wonderful to see so many people gathered in Blackwell’s Main Hall to hear from Lakeland Arts’ Senior Curator, Will Cooper, and William Fawcett, co-author of the recently published Baillie Scott: Architect and Author.

Together, they explored Baillie Scott’s ideas, creative practice and enduring legacy, as we celebrate 125 years of Blackwell.

We had a very exciting delivery from the Victoria and Albert Museum this week for our M H Baillie Scott: Architect & Designer exhibition, which is now open!

This is a collar designed by Baillie Scott and actually made by his wife, Florence Kate Nash. The collar, featuring nature motifs of fronds and harebells and intricate beading, was very fancy and not intended for everyday use.

Florence often collaborated with Scott, but her work listed as ‘unpaid domestic work’ in the census, despite working as an embroiderer and textile artist for her husband. Unfortunately, very few of Florence’s embroideries have survived, especially due to Baillie Scott’s offices burning down twice.

You can now visit the exhibition at Blackwell.
