Blackwell is a beautifully preserved example of Arts & Crafts architecture with stunning stained glass windows and handcrafted features. It was designed by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott as a holiday home for the Holt family in 1898 and remains an ideal retreat into nature. The inviting window seats and garden terraces offer spectacular views of the surrounding Lakeland scenery. The period rooms are carefully furnished with a blend of Arts & Crafts furniture and contemporary handcrafted pieces. A permanent exhibition explores the Arts & Crafts Movement with a display of works by Charles Voysey and William Morris. Check our website to see what’s on at Blackwell today:

Join author William Fawcett and Lakeland Arts’ Senior Curator Will Cooper at Blackwell – The Arts & Crafts House for an evening exploring M H Baillie Scott’s work, his vision for the ‘artistic house’ and his contribution to the Arts & Crafts movement.

The event coincides with the opening of our new exhibition, M H Baillie Scott: Architect & Designer, and includes an opportunity for book signing and to purchase the new edition of Baillie Scott: The Artistic House.

Today, our team has been busy hanging the six original prints of Baillie Scott’s design for the ‘House for an Art Lover’ competition in 1901, for our upcoming exhibition at Blackwell.

The competition was entered by 36 architects, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh whose design came in 3rd place. Baillie Scott’s design came in 2nd, as his exterior didn’t demonstrate an ‘entirely modern originality’ according to the judges.

Opening 19 September, the exhibition celebrates 125 years of Blackwell – The Arts & Crafts House and brings together a major selection of works by its architect and Arts & Crafts designer, Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott.
