Did I ever tell you all about me NOT getting into art college because I wasn't good enough?

No? Ah well, grab a brew and a bickie... Let me tell you all about it 😉

1987, Age 16, I took myself and my 'school art: down for an interview at Bradford's art college.

As part of the interview process (there were about 6 of us to be interrogated, a'hem I mean interviewed) we had to draw some, or all of the objects on the table in front of us.

I got stuck in, and started to draw a print roller and some of the bits and bobs around it... after time, one by one each potential student was called in for interview.

Time just flew by and, as I do now, I took my time, making my drawing just right, concentrating on depth, details, proportions and such like.

Anyways, everyone else had been plucked away and interviewed, and I was the last remaining.

The interviewing Art tutor came up to me, looked over my shoulder... Huffed and said nastily..."Is that all you've done?". She then took me, my portfolio and drawing into the interview room and complained to the other art tutor, that I hadn't done enough, and we don't need students like this ...blah blah, blah...

I don't remember much else about that day, needless to say I never heard anything back from Bradford Art College either! (Thank goodness 🤣)

Oh, and the other art college I went to for an interview (Keighley), I took my Mum as support (protection!🤣). She thought the place was rubbish, and wouldn't let me sign up! 🤣🤣

40 years later, neither of those college buildings exist, both have been demolished.... Unlike me, here I am drawing details and now starting to teach others how to be detailed! 😉

So, all I can say to a budding artist, stepping out into the big wide world is.... Just be you, and create art that you enjoy, even if it does take time. Someone out there will be watching, and love it... And just to add...you'll still be around when the college has long gone 👋👋👋👋

A busy few days here at Carol Spencer Art HQ.

Not much drawing though I'm afraid... Its the school holidays, my son is at home and I've no idea where my time goes 🤣.

Friday we had a lovely trip out to Hard Castle Craggs, which is not far from where I live, but it must be 30 years since I was there last 🤭

Gosh isn't our beautiful green countryside a crisp yellow now?hopefully we will get rain soon 🫣

Anyways, I managed a trip out to Art in the Pen at Skipton yesterday which for anyone interested in anything creative, it is like an Alladins cave of beautiful art and craft. It was great to have a quick catch-up with a few fellow animal artists too !

I'm hosting at some great venues that are just perfect!

I've just realised that I have another fantastic venue of my own! 🤦 I can host small parties of up to 6 in my own conservatory! Or even one to ones!

I've got all the gear and lots of ideas! The lighting is great, the view ain't half bad, there'll be tea n stickies available too!

I'm loving this old girls tufty Jack Russell fur 😍

Lots of layers of different greys all blended together to give that squidgy look 😘

Can't wait to show you all when she's finished!
