Sometimes we avoid quiet moments by surrounding ourselves with people or keeping busy with work or tasks because we don’t want to think or feel. Facing our thoughts and learning to process emotions and feelings can leave us feeling lighter, give us clarity and help us to feel empowered and in control. But this can be very difficult for some of us. Understanding how this way of existing can harm us may give us the little nudge we need to take back control. Avoidance can lead to:
•Poor mental health
•Burnout from holding it together
•Poor physical health
•Lack of self worth
•Weakened immune system
•Increased cortisol levels (stress hormone)
•Premature aging
•Self destructive behaviours
•Substance abuse
•Oversleeping.
But letting go doesn’t come easy to begin with and you don’t have to do it alone.
•Talking things through with someone who makes you feel safe and held and doesn’t encourage destructive behaviours like heavy drinking.
•Writing it all down.
•Creative expression such as art.
•Sound healing (of course this is my fave).
•Reiki
•Sister circles to share with likeminded women to empower each other.
It has to come out somehow. If we hold onto to it then it will force us to face it sooner or later. Our bodies will be forced to stop and reflect.
Find your own method, whatever makes you feel safe. It might be something different to the above. It could be professional support if that’s what you really need but please don’t keep it in. Face it, process it, let it go. It’s really not worth your energy. Life is short so find your happy place.
