Had lots of light up fun Saturday evening. Lots of laughs and chats.

Also started the tradition of "Doinking the flower". (If you know, you know 😂)

More importantly, sharing the magical lights is still my favourite time of year.

Only through darkness do you find the hidden light.

The Stilling Trees: Ash and Elm

PB the Storyteller and I (Marie from Woodland Lighting) have put our knowledge together to share with you some snippets of magic and folklore of our new Stilling Trees Oakleaf Camp. A beautiful balance between them as you will see below.

Ash and Elm make a particularly lovely pairing for The Stilling Trees, especially because of their connection in Norse tradition to the creation of the first humans. One small folklore note: the story comes from the Völuspá, where the three gods are usually named Odin, Hœnir and Lóðurr.

🌿 The Stilling Trees — Ash & Elm

ASH — Yggdrasil, connection & inner strength Ash is deeply woven into Norse mythology. Yggdrasil, the great World Tree, is traditionally described as an ash, its roots and branches connecting the different realms. In later magical and folkloric associations, ash carries themes of connection, protection, strength, wisdom and the meeting of worlds. It is a fitting tree beneath which to become still and remember our place within something larger.

ELM — intuition, endurance & the quiet feminine
Elm has associations with endurance, grounding, intuition and the mysteries of life and death. In the Norse creation story, the elm becomes Embla, the first woman, making it a beautiful symbol of awakening, embodiment and the potential for life waiting quietly within.

🌳 The Story of Ask and Embla

In the Völuspá, three gods — Odin, Hœnir and Lóðurr — were travelling when they came upon two trees or pieces of wood upon the shore: Ask and Embla, traditionally understood as Ash and Elm.

They had no life, no breath and no destiny.

Each god bestowed a gift upon them.

Odin gave them breath and spirit.
Hœnir gave them mind or understanding.
Lóðurr gave them blood, warmth and colour.

And so the silent trees awakened as Ask and Embla, the first man and first woman, ancestors of humankind.

There is something rather beautiful in that for the Stilling Trees: in the story, life begins in stillness. The trees do not strive to become something. They simply stand — or lie — waiting, until breath, awareness and warmth awaken within them.

We could perhaps put a tiny sign between them saying:

> The Stilling Trees
Ash & Elm

Be still for a moment.
Feel the breath within you.
Notice the earth beneath you.
Remember that you, too, belong to the living world.
