COLLECTOR CONCERNS

You’ve spent 20 years building your autograph collection. Maybe you see it as an investment, even part of your pension.

But what happens in another 20 or 30 years?

Will the COAs you have today still carry the same weight? Will the companies still exist? Will your family know which certificate belongs to which item?

That’s why ACGcert™ is building an exact-item image database for the next generation of collectors.

Every item we authenticate is photographed and registered, creating a permanent visual record of the exact item we examined — not simply a certificate number.

Because one day your collection may belong to somebody else.

THE EXACT ITEM. PERMANENTLY RECORDED.

HOW MESSY IS TOO MESSY?

This is one of the genuine dilemmas autograph authenticators face.

Noel and Liam Gallagher have both been signing some extremely shortened versions of their autographs recently — in some cases, little more than a few strokes of the pen.

We know genuine signatures can change dramatically depending on the signing environment. A rushed autograph at a premiere or on the street isn’t necessarily going to look the same as one signed with time and space.

But there has to be a point where too little identifiable signature structure remains to confidently authenticate it.

And that raises an interesting question for collectors.

If we’re confident one of these extremely rushed signatures is genuine, should ACGcert™ still authenticate it — even if the quality means it only achieves something like an ACG 1 signature grade?

Or should there be a minimum level of identifiable signature structure before we’re prepared to certify it at all?

We want collectors to decide.

We’ve added a poll — vote YES or NO and tell us what you think in the comments.

This is a genuine dilemma in modern autograph authentication, and we’re interested to see where collectors stand.

VOTE IN THE POLL.

Poll question:
Should signatures this rushed still be authenticated?

YES — if they’re genuine
NO — too little to authenticate
DEFINITELY MAYBE — I can’t decide

BE SAFE. ASK BEFORE YOU BUY.

Online marketplaces can be an absolute minefield when it comes to buying autographs.

Listings can come with convincing stories, certificates and claims of “100% genuine” — but that doesn’t mean the autograph has been independently authenticated.

On major UK marketplaces, autograph listings can appear without any specialist authentication check by the platform before they go live. That puts the responsibility back on the collector.

Before spending hundreds — or potentially thousands — ask before you buy.

For just £10, the ACGcert™ Quick Opinion service allows you to send us photographs of an autograph you’re considering buying. We’ll examine it and give you our opinion on whether it is likely or unlikely to pass full ACGcert™ authentication.

£10 now could potentially save you thousands on a forgery.

Seen something on eBay or another marketplace that you’re unsure about?

DON’T GUESS. DON’T RELY ON THE STORY. GET A QUICK OPINION.

NO FACELESS TEXT. ONLY DATABASE.

When you check an ACGcert™ certification, we don’t just show you a code and tell you it’s authentic.

We show you the exact item we authenticated.

This Rory McIlroy signed Nike cap is registered as AG04588, with photographs of the actual cap and signature examined by our team.

Signature Grade: ACG 10 — Flawless

Search the certification. View the item. Compare it with what’s in front of you.

Because a certification number tells you a record exists. The exact-item photograph tells you it matches.

Search. Verify. Confirm.

FOOTBALL CERT OF THE WEEK — HARRY KANE

This week’s pick is a superb Harry Kane signed England shirt, recently authenticated and graded by ACGcert™.

A particularly nice example, with Kane adding “Best Wishes” alongside his autograph.

Following full authentication and in-hand examination, the signature achieved the highest grade on the ACGcert scale:

SIGNATURE GRADE: ACG 10 — FLAWLESS

Certification: AG135161

The shirt also comes with an ACGcert Letter of Authenticity, and the exact item has been photographed and registered in our database, giving collectors a permanent record of the autograph we examined.

A fantastic Harry Kane piece and a worthy first ACGcert Football Cert of the Week.

JOHAN CRUYFF — WHY ACG 6?

A nice example of why authentication and signature grading are two different things.

This Johan Cruyff autograph is genuine. The signature itself is a strong example, but there’s a noticeable ink smudge at the end of the autograph, which affects the overall presentation and resulted in an ACG 6.

Without that smudge, we would have graded the signature higher.

That’s exactly why we grade alongside authentication. A grade isn’t questioning whether an autograph is genuine — it gives collectors a clearer understanding of the quality and condition of the signature they actually own.

Swipe through and you can see exactly what affected this one.

WHO IS PROTECTING UK AUTOGRAPH BUYERS?

Major online marketplaces are still allowing cheap football forgeries to be sold with little or no meaningful autograph-authenticity screening.

We see the same patterns repeatedly: big-name players, difficult signers and sellers seemingly offering an endless supply of “signed” shirts.

Yet there appears to be a strange imbalance.

List a counterfeit branded football shirt and major marketplaces have systems designed to identify and remove it.

Put a forged autograph on a shirt and sell it as genuine? The protection for buyers can look very different.

At ACGcert, we’ve tried to engage with major marketplace operators about the autograph industry and the problems collectors face.

Our experience has been frustrating. We haven’t seen the level of interest, specialist understanding or willingness to learn about autograph fraud that we believe an industry worth millions to UK collectors deserves.

These are enormous businesses earning fees from transactions on their platforms. Collectors are entitled to ask why stronger safeguards aren’t in place for signed memorabilia.

We’re not asking marketplaces to become autograph experts.

We’re asking them to work with people who are.

Until that happens, buyers need to protect themselves.

Don’t assume that because an autograph is allowed to be listed on a major marketplace, somebody has checked that it’s genuine.
