"Timber" and "Joinery-Grade Timber" are not the same purchase...

The cleanest joinery timbers, graded for appearance on the face and both edges, are becoming increasingly difficult to source. More pine is being diverted into the structural market, Nordic and Baltic log prices remain at historic highs, and the clear, knot-free section of every log is the scarcest part of it.

What does that mean if you're specifying or buying timber for a visible finish?

🪵 Grade is everything: 2mm knot in the wrong place can be the difference between a flawless architrave and a reject.

⚙️ The machining matters as much as the board: a beautiful moulding or profile starts with the right blank, accurately machined and properly prepared.

🗓️ Plan ahead: clear grades are often the first products to tighten in availability when supply comes under pressure.

If it's meant to be seen, it deserves the right material...

Over 100 years in timber. Three generations. One reason that matters is your fit-out project.

E O Burton has been trading since 1921 and machining timber in-house since 1969.

n an industry where most merchants are chasing stock, that history isn't nostalgia - it's the reason we can still do the thing a fit-out actually needs - put the right clear timber on site, matched and machined, first time.

Fit-out is one of the few parts of UK construction growing in 2026, and it's judged entirely on how the finished space looks. The timber on show: reception desks, feature stairs, wrapped columns, boardroom joinery - is where a client's eye goes first.

Three generations of grading, selecting and machining appearance-grade timber is exactly what keeps that finish consistent.

We work two ways, depending on how you're set up:

→ Direct to Fit-Out Contractors: appearance-grade clear timber, held in stock and bespoke-machined to your sections in our own mills, so your programme isn't hostage to a tight market or a mismatched delivery.

→ Specialist Supply to your Joinery Partners: if you subcontract the timber works, we back your joinery firms with the consistent clear stock and machining they need to hit your spec. They keep the relationship; a century of experience makes sure the material never lets them down.

Same outcome either way: matched grade, consistent colour and moisture content across the run, and no reorders halfway through.
