πŸ“œ ACI Railway Archives β€” File No. 004

Another fragment has been recovered from the journals of the Mysterious Railway Engineer.

The date is uncertain.

At first, the entry appears completely ordinary.

10:14 β€” Steam locomotive approaching.

10:16 β€” This cannot be right.

10:18 β€” Station remarkably well maintained.

10:21 β€” Passengers everywhere.

10:24 β€” Spoke with gentleman on platform.

10:27 β€” I understand now.

THEY SAVED IT.

They actually saved it.

For a man who had watched stations close, tracks disappear and places he remembered slowly vanish, this must have been quite a discovery.

The railway hadn't survived.

People had brought it back.

Elsewhere on the recovered page Arthur had written:

"Preserve what matters."

"Memory is also an engineering task."

Perhaps he was beginning to understand that a railway can disappear without being forgotten.

πŸš‚ More fragments from the ACI Railway Archives will be released as we recover them.

What happens once your railway knows a train is there? πŸš‚

Block detection can tell us whether a section of track is occupied.

That's useful for signalling β€” but on Holgate we started asking a different question:

What else can the railway do with that information?

Could it prevent a route being set into an occupied road?
Could it protect conflicting movements?
Could it react to a train actually arriving rather than relying on timers?
Could automation assist the operator rather than replace them?

Those questions have taken our work with Holgate beyond simple block detection and towards something much more interesting.

In the latest part of the Holgate series, we look at detection, signalling and train control, why we explored LocoNet, why an exhibition layout presents some different practical considerations, and how DCC-EX and EX-RAIL allow the railway to begin reacting to what is actually happening on the layout.

Beyond Block Detection: Teaching Holgate to React

Read the latest Holgate article:
https://acimodelrailways.co.uk/blogs/news/model-railway-block-detection-automation

And perhaps the biggest question of all:

How much should the railway decide for itself β€” and how much should remain with the operator?

We'd be interested to hear how other modellers approach that balance.

Go beyond model railway block detection. See how Holgate uses DCC-EX and EX-RAIL to turn occupancy information into signalling, route protection and automation.

πŸ“œ ACI Railway Archives β€” File No. 003

Another fragment has been recovered from the diary of the Mysterious Railway Engineer.

This one appears to date from 1941.

How it ended up inside an old signal box tool cabinet is unclear.

What he was doing there is even less clear.

23:17 β€” No lights anywhere.

23:22 β€” Yet the railway continues.

23:31 β€” Signals still obeyed.

23:46 β€” Another train arrived precisely when expected.

23:51 β€” Remarkable.

23:53 β€” A railway does not need to see.

It needs to know.

At first, we assumed he was simply describing Britain's railways operating through the wartime blackout.

Then we noticed the notes on the following page:

"Information without wires."

"Decisions without delay."

"Control without confusion."

In 1941.

We are beginning to have some questions about this gentleman.

πŸš‚ More fragments from the ACI Railway Archives will be released as we recover them.

ACI Railway Archives – File No. 002

Recovered from the diary of the Mysterious Railway Engineer

Platform 3

08:10 – Sat quietly watching the steam trains.

08:12 – Mentioned "wireless automation."

08:13 – Everyone ignored him.

08:14 – Drank tea.

Several years later...

Everyone wished they'd listened.

Have a great weekend! πŸš‚β˜•

πŸ”§ **The ACI-CD16 Project Takes Its Next Step**

Every new product starts with an idea.

The real test begins when that idea becomes a working circuit board.

We've just published the next chapter in the development of the **ACI-CD16 16-Channel Current Detector**, following the prototype from its very first power-up through its initial testing.

The good news? Occupancy detection worked exactly as intended.

The even better news? We also found something that needed improving.

That might sound strange, but that's exactly what prototype testing is for. We'd much rather discover and fix issues on the workbench than after a product reaches someone's railway.

If you enjoy seeing how model railway electronics are really developedβ€”not just the finished productβ€”we'd love you to follow the journey.

πŸ“– **Read the story from the beginning:**
πŸ‘‰ Why ACI Built the CD16

Then continue with:
πŸ‘‰ Prototype Testing Begins

As always, we'll continue sharing both the successes and the lessons learned as development progresses.

β˜€οΈ Friday Fun β˜€οΈ

From the diary of the Mysterious Railway Engineer...

"A change of scenery improves creativity... even if the Wi-Fi is terrible."

After countless layouts, countless signal boxes and more cups of tea than anyone could reasonably count, it appears our elusive engineer has finally taken a well-earned holiday.

Rumour has it he's somewhere on the British coast...

Although several local seagulls have reportedly become very interested in model railways. πŸ¦πŸš‚

Where will he turn up next Friday?

Nobody knows...

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

πŸ₯΅ **Even our trains are feeling the heat!** β˜€οΈπŸš‚

The recent hot weather isn't just uncomfortable for usβ€”it can also affect our model railways.

High temperatures can sometimes lead to:
πŸš† Track expansion and slight misalignment.
πŸͺ΅ Baseboards moving or warping.
πŸ”€ Pointwork becoming less reliable.
⚑ Electronics running warmer than usual.

Fortunately, most issues are temporary, but it's always worth checking your layout if it's in a loft, garage, shed or conservatory.

We're interested to hear from the community...

**Has the recent heatwave caused any problems on your railway?**

Have you found a clever solution?
Added ventilation?
Left expansion gaps?
Moved the layout indoors?
Or has everything carried on without missing a beat?

Share your experiences (and photos if you have them!) in the comments. Your advice could help another modeller avoid a few headaches this summer.

πŸ‘‡ We'd love to hear how your railway is coping with the heat!

🌞 Friday Fun with the Mysterious Railway Engineer 🌞

The forecast said "sunshine"...

The Mysterious Railway Engineer took it as a perfectly good excuse to declare an official day off! 😎

While the garden railway keeps everything running smoothly, even the trusty CSB1 is making the most of the rare British sunshine and topping up its "solar enthusiasm" before the clouds inevitably return. β˜€οΈπŸš‚

Sometimes the best maintenance is simply sitting back, watching the trains go by, and enjoying a well-earned cup of tea... or coffee! β˜•

How's the weather where you are this weekend? Are you out in the garden, or hiding in the railway room?

πŸš‚ Every product has a story.

Some start with a great idea.

Others start with a problem that simply refuses to go away.

While developing and operating the Holgate exhibition layout, we discovered that finding a reliable train detector was only part of the challenge. Wiring, maintenance, expansion and organisation all became just as important.

Rather than adapting our layouts around existing hardware, we decided to design our own solution.

Our latest article looks behind the scenes at why we're developing the ACI 16-Channel Current Detector, the lessons Holgate taught us, and how those experiences are shaping the next generation of ACI layout control products.

This isn't a product launchβ€”it's the story of how a real railway inspired our first in-house electronics design.

πŸ”” Final Whistle...

The match is over.

The final whistle has blown.

But unlike football, your model railway doesn't stop there.

Throughout every session, the DCC-EX CSB1 has been working quietly behind the scenes:

βœ… Every route completed.
βœ… Every signal obeyed.
βœ… Every train arrived safely.

Whether you're driving trains yourself or letting EX-RAIL take control, reliable automation means you can spend less time worrying about what might happen... and more time enjoying your railway.

From the first whistle to the last, intelligent control makes all the difference.

Thank you for following our World Cup journey over the past few weeks. Here's to many more successful runsβ€”on and off the railway. πŸš‚βš½
