Tomorrow is going to be a big day in Brigg with the classic car rally and 1940s theme. Hopefully it will be a successful day in The Brigg Book Stop too!

I’m all set to go with my display ready and lots of new books on the shelves. Carole McEntee-Taylor will be signing, chatting and selling too so I’m excited.

Don’t think you’d have to be Einstein to see that I haven’t had any help with this clip! I wanted to get it shared, though, as Carole is coming to The Book Stop on Sunday for signing, selling and chatting. The day has got away from me! Carole's books look amazing and she has written so many!

I’ve never been to a 1940s classic car rally before (or any kind of rally, come to that!), but I’ve bought tons of classic car books in and have some good war books too, so fingers crossed I’ll have a few visitors! Having Carole agree to come too is such a bonus and perfect for the day. 📘🥰📗

There’s lots happening in the next few days at The Book Stop:

Visiting author, Carole McEntee Taylor, will be visiting this Sunday as we get involved with Brigg’s classic car 1940s rally (more info coming soon!)

But forefront in my mind this morning is our crochet afternoons planned for Thursdays.

They’ve been in the events page for ages, but I keep forgetting to mention it. The arrival of some brill new crochet books and crochet packs reminded me!!

MARMALADE ATKINSON EVENT CANCELLED

An update about Marmalade Atkinson's visit to The Book Stop.

Sadly, we've decided to cancel the event planned for this Friday, 18th September. 😔

Marmalade and I had a good chat today and, having also listened to some really helpful customer feedback, we've decided that this particular date and format just haven't quite worked. Rather than go ahead with an event that isn't as well attended as we'd both hoped, we'll have a rethink.

The good news is that Marmalade WILL be coming to The Book Stop soon to sign books, chat to readers and sell her book as part of one of our regular Saturday author meet and greets. 😊📚 We'll let you know the date as soon as it's arranged.

And if you'd still like to meet and support Marmalade this weekend, she'll be at Grimsby Minster this Saturday, 19th September, promoting, signing and selling her books, and she'll be reading a story at 2.20pm. Do pop along and say hello if you're in Grimsby.

One final practical thing. Some local schools may have very kindly shared information about Friday's event for us. If a message still makes its way to you through your child's school, please ignore it as the event is definitely cancelled. There may just be a little time lag while the updated information works its way through to everyone.

Thank you to everyone who showed an interest, shared the event or offered feedback. It's all part of me learning what works best for The Book Stop, and I'm very grateful. ❤️📚

Right, today's the day for a big push for Marmalade Atkinson's visit on Friday. Take-up hasn't been great so far, so I'm trying to work out why. 🤔

Marmalade is a GREAT writer and the book is really good fun. 🙂 It's spooky, so perfect for this time of year, and although it's suitable from around age 8, it has a lovely grown-up feel to it. It also has that cartoon-style format that I think works brilliantly for children who might not always be the first to pick up a novel.

I'm thinking maybe Friday at 5pm wasn't my finest bit of event planning! I thought catching parents and children straight after school was a good idea, but perhaps by Friday at 5pm everyone is thinking, "I've done a full week. I'm going home."

I'm wondering if £17.50 sounds too much. Having said that, the book alone is listed online at £19.95, and the ticket includes a signed copy of the book, entry for a child and an adult, the event itself and refreshments. I don't think it is out of the way, but I completely get that it is still a lot of money to find.

Maybe (probably) I just need to get better at promoting events! I Really want to get things right as I learn the ropes of this bookshop malarkey, ao I'd welcome some constructive feedback, particularly from people with more retail or events experience than me. Feel free to DM me, but be gentle with me!!!!

I'm not giving up on Friday! I'd really like us to get enough people together to make it a fun evening for Marmalade and, most importantly, for the children who come. I'd love to know quite soon whether we've got enough of you coming to make Friday happen, so if you've been thinking about it, now is definitely the time to book on my events page.

It's a rainy old day in Brigg, but don't let that stop you popping into The Book Stop. There's a warm welcome waiting, a coffee and biscuit, not to mention a jigsaw that needs finishing.

I’m up and about this morning getting the logistics sorted for Marmalade Atkinson’s visit to The Book Stop on Friday. 📚

I’m really hoping we can get a good turnout. The tickets include a heavily discounted signed copy of her book, entry for one young person and one adult, and Marmalade will, of course, be there to sign books, chat and answer questions in between her story telling. I think it should be a really fun evening.

All the details are on the Events page of my website, https://thebriggbookstop.co.uk/ and you can sign up on there. If you are an adult wishing to come alone I can sort that for you too.

I think I've mentioned before that when I worked in the libraries, I was forever going on about the three Es of reading: Education, Empowerment and Empathy. To sound sincere just for a moment (I know that's not terribly like me!) I really do believe in them and I'm determined to play a small part in promoting reading amongst young people.

Now I’m six weeks into The Book Stop and things are running semi-smoothly. Well, half-semi-smoothly. 😂 I’m really keen to get to know much more about what our young people enjoy and what actually gets them excited about books. I'm not just saying this, but it has been a privilege to chat with the youngsters who've been in the shop so far. It makes me feel hopeful for the future. Also, as far as I can tell tastes haven’t changed enormously since my library days - a good book is always a good book I guess!

One of my aims for The Book Stop is to get involved with local schools too, (if they will have me!) and I feel as though Marmalade’s visit is a first step in that direction.

So please do spread the word about Marmalade's visit. If you're planning on coming to it do sign up. I’d love to give Marmalade a really warm welcome from The Book Stop community on Friday. 🥰📚

Also, while you are up there do always feel free to help yourself to refreshments, or just have a quiet sit down with a book.
