The Sweetest Thing will only be open until 10am this morning as I am taking my sweets on the road to a Care Home in Halifax.

I will be doing a Sweet Therapy Reminiscence Session with the Residents there where they will be transported back in time to remember the smell and taste of sweets from their era.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Update Sat 13th June⭐️⭐️⭐️

The corner of Commercial Street and Market Street is open today BUT there is a step to negotiate.

It is passable on foot and with a buggy but if you're in a wheelchair or with a walking frame/trolley I'd assess the situation first. Access is still available by crossing the road to Total Travel Brighouse, walking along to Yarn House (Hallmark as was) and crossing back over. If youre struggling to get to me, ring the shop and I'll try get to you.

Quick video regarding access to the shop as at 9am Friday morning 12th June 2026 - this could obviously change as the day goes on but this is where we are at now.

If you're coming along Commercial Street from Aldi end you can turn down by Papa John's pizza and access Market Street from there. If you're coming from Merry England side you cannot turn left by Mind Charity Shop - instead you need to cross towards Total Travel Brighouse walk along to the Yarn House (Hallmark as was) use the crossing there and then come down past No 8 Market Street Barbers and across the road.

This is the same for Prima Donna Boutique(Donna Louise Whitworth), Thoughtful Gifting Shop, Simply Divine Things.

Access is available from Bethel Street end as usual.

The Brighouse Vintage Car Trail has started today. Sheets are available from Visit Brighouse, The Sweetest Thing and other participating shops, follow the trail around the town and find the answers to the clues. Once you have found them all, hand in your sheet to Brighouse BID and be in with a chance of winning a prize 🏆 Good luck 🤞

Here at The Sweetest Thing I run Sweet based Reminiscence Sessions. I started these sessions after regularly hearing "oh I remember those sweets" or "blimey those sweets take me back" in my Shop. I initially approached a few Care Homes/Community Groups and they absolutely loved the idea.

Reminiscence is a way to help people (especially those living with dementia) by encouraging them to talk about their past. It can help improve well-being, mood, and cognitive ability.

How it works:

People living with dementia often have better memories of the past rather than recent events.
Reminiscence can help people interact with others through their stories and memories.
Reminiscence can be done in groups or on a one-on-one basis.
It can be assisted by objects, photos, videos, music, smells, and tastes - in this case SWEETS.

Benefits:

Can help maintain self-esteem and confidence
Can improve social interactions
Can improve mood, cognitive ability, and well-being

I have many years experience working in Social Care and more recently was an Activity and Wellbeing Manager within a large Care Home so your family member/residents are in safe hands 😁

A session consists of me taking approximately 10 different sweets along and we then smell the sweets, obviously sample them and talk about them. Some of the memories that come flooding back can bring a tear to the eye or have you laughing out loud.
