If you haven’t already signed the petition to introduce some kind of licensing for air weapons, then please do.

Every week we take in several animals, usually pigeons and crows, that have been shot with air gun pellets. These animals suffer extreme agony followed by infection and being torn apart by predators such as cats and foxes because they can no longer escape. It’s not only wildlife that suffers, but domestic cats and racing pigeons are also victims.

As the law stands, anyone over the age of 18 can buy an air weapon. Whilst some of these people are genuine and use targets, some are using live animals as targets and getting a thrill out of seeing them suffer.

We recently had 6 wood pigeons shot in the Uttoxeter area, all surrounding the same street. Although we reported it to the police, they didn’t seem to care and never bothered to respond. A register of people who purchased air weapons would make the job of getting these types of people stopped.

A Goshawk was shot in Rangemore and was euthanised after his wing was obliterated by an air gun pellet. Known as ‘The phantom of the forest’, Goshawks rely on speed and are extremely agile, weaving in and out and under tree foliage in order to catch prey. The police were informed but the occupants of the six houses where the bird was found all denied having a gun. With licensing or a register of air guns, the perpetrator would have been easier to find.

A gull and peregrine falcon were shot near Loughborough in 2021. The perpetrator was known and reported but denied having an air gun. A register would mean that the guy wouldn’t have been able to get away with it.

This beautiful male sparrowhawk in the photo was shot in Winshill and had to be put to sleep after the pellet smashed his wing completely meaning he would never fly again. The wing was completely twisted and under his body.

A young raven was shot in Ashby near the castle, leaving him with a disabling wing injury. The person who shot him has shot the male parent and other birds in the past and is still doing it now. It’s believed the same person also shot a cat. A register would mean this person could be located quickly and prosecuted for his crimes against wildlife and pets.
