Our first event is a Christmas pop-up gallery and shop in central Brighton! There’s also a dazzling programme of workshops where you can get creating yourself.

A collaboration between Brighton-based artists, Artshed and Papier Maverick, UpstArt Brighton showcases creatives from the South East and encourages and promotes eco-practice. Our Christmas pop-up, from Friday 3 to Friday 31 December 2021, is in the heart of Brighton - a few steps away from the famous North Laines, close to Brighton railway station and just a few minutes walk from Brighton Christm

as Festival & Market on Valley Gardens, which is expected to draw thousands of festive shoppers. We’re working with all sorts of artists and makers - from fine artists to candle makers, card makers, shapeshifters and oddbods - to create UpstArt eco-friendly pop-up Christmas Gallery & Shop. Devilishly quirky, bursting with talent and filled with unexpected surprises, UpstArt will sprinkle a bit of glitter on your festivities. Join community group Bhassexplore- Beachy Head And Seven Sisters Extreme Plastic Object Removal this weekend to clear a tonne of plastic waste from a stretch of rocks to the east of Brighton Marina! Base camp is on the second slipway ramp east of Brighton Marina from 8am on Saturday 20 and 9am on Sunday 21 August and all are welcome - including artists who can make use of the ghost fishing nets, rope and other items. If you want to help remove plastic waste from the granite rocks on the beach, you’ll need to be strong and nimble and work in pairs. Bring a serrated knife or a hacksaw with spare blades if you have one, gloves and non-slip footwear. Volunteers will also be needed to collect and carry waste up the beach and sort out the recyclable items. BHASS Explore volunteers remove marine waste between Eastbourne and Brighton Marina. A call out to all artists who care about the environment! Bhassexplore- Beachy Head And Seven Sisters Extreme Plastic Object Removal is looking for creatives to come and Paint a Parrot under the Pier at Eastbourne this summer to help get the eco message across, as part of the community organisation's 'Summer of Love for Our Planet' initiative. This is what our friend Norm from BHASS says: 'Paint a Parrot Perched in the Palm Tree Under the Pier... With the Penguins... and hopefully we can achieve our aim of getting over a hundred parrots painted by a hundred different artists this summer.' Two of our very favourite local community groups are organising beach cleans in the Brighton area this weekend. Bhassexplore- Beachy Head And Seven Sisters Extreme Plastic Object Removal invites you to join their 'Summer of Love' and clear plastic waste to the east of Brighton Marina on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May from early morning until sunset. They'll be on the rocks between the first and second slipways east of Brighton Marina. If you want to help remove plastic waste from the granite rocks on the beach, you’ll need to be strong and nimble and work in pairs. Bring a serrated knife or a hacksaw with spare blades if you have one, gloves and non-slip footwear. Volunteers will also be needed to collect and carry waste up the beach and artists are welcome to come and take materials for creative endeavours. Meanwhile, Leave No Trace Brighton have a community beach clean on Sunday 15th from 9 to 11am and there's a pair of Washed Out Festival tickets for the person who picks up the most waste on the day! Community group Bhassexplore- Beachy Head And Seven Sisters Extreme Plastic Object Removal invites you to come and clear plastic waste to the east of Brighton Marina this weekend! On Saturday 9 April the team will be working from the second slipway ramp east of Brighton Marina from 8am to sundown and on Sunday 10th they'll be on the nearest slipway to the Marina from 9am until sundown. If you want to help remove plastic waste from the granite rocks on the beach, you’ll need to be strong and nimble and work in pairs. Bring a serrated knife or a hacksaw with spare blades if you have one, gloves and non-slip footwear. Volunteers will also be needed to collect and carry waste up the beach and artists are welcome to come and take materials for creative endeavours. Leave No Trace Brighton is raising funds for Ukraine and running a silent disco beach clean this Sunday 20 March in partnership with Hush Beats Disco. Tickets are £10 and the charity hopes to raise an impressive £500. Every penny raised will go to the Disasters Emergency Committe Ukraine Appeal and IFAW. The beach clean runs from 9 to 11am from Shelter Hall on the sea front and you're asked to dress in yellow and blue to show solidarity with the Ukranian people. All equipment is provided and you can buy your ticket on the Leave No Trace Brighton website. You'll need to leave a £5 deposit for the headphones on the day.

If the way you create involves paint, it may be more of a problem for the environment than you think. The pigments in some paints (cadmium for example) and the solvents you need to use with oil paints aren't good for either you or the planet. Meanwhile acrylic paint is basically pigment mixed with plastic - so when you wash your brushes, that plastic goes straight down the sink. The good news is there are some green alternatives. Take a look at Natural Earth Paint EU. They make non-toxic natural pigments, eco solvent if you're using oils and a plant-based 'natural acrylic medium' (so no plastic) that you can mix with pigments to make your own eco acrylic. They tell us plant-based acrylic colours in tubes will also be on sale this summer. There are loads of recipes on the Natural Earth Paint website and paint products for kids too - including facepaint. Community group Bhassexplore- Beachy Head And Seven Sisters EXtreme PLastic Object REmoval is inviting local artists, families and anyone who cares about the marine environment to come and clear plastic waste and build a giant sea monster east of Brighton Marina on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 February as part of the organisation’s ‘Monster Beach Clean’ from 8am to sundown on both days. If you want to help remove plastic waste from the granite rocks on the sea front, you’ll need to be strong and nimble and work in pairs. Bring a serrated knife or a hacksaw with spare blades if you have one, gloves and non-slip footwear. Volunteers will also be needed to collect and carry waste up the beach. If you’re an artist or if you fancy getting involved in creating the sea monster, you’ll be using the beach waste to build a giant plastic waste Godzilla. BHASS Explore volunteers remove marine waste between Eastbourne and Brighton Marina and have cleared 21 tonnes in the past 22 months. The Design Museum in South Kensington has a brilliant exhibition on at the moment which looks at the problem of waste in our throwaway society. 'Waste Age : What Can Design Do?' is only open until Sunday 20 February, so catch it while you can to see how designers are integrating waste into contemporary design. The Guardian describes the exhibition as "A wake-up call", while the Evening Standard says "Fascinating, beautiful glimpses into a brave new world of design". At UpstArt Christmas Gallery & Shop in December, we saw records and waste plastic transformed into floral bouquets, tennis racquet presses into mirrors and photo frames, My Little Ponies into planters, NOS cylinders into Christmas decorations. **ARTIST CALL-OUT!** Artists and members of the public are invited to make a giant sea monster from plastic waste on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 February as part of the Bhassexplore- Beachy Head And Seven Sisters EXtreme PLastic Object REmoval 'Monster Beach Clean'. Every time the volunteers from BHASS Explore do their beach cleans, there's a massive haul of fishing waste and other plastic rubbish which is removed from the marine environment for good. The Monster Beach Clean is from 8am to sundown at the second slip east of Brighton Marina. We'll post more info about the beach clean closer to the time.
