I do miss seeing you all in my shop but - and don’t take this the wrong way - life is a little more chilled now. Running a small retail business is FULL ON. It was pretty scary deciding not to renew the lease. I wondered if I could make a living whilst finding that important work life balance.

So the down side - I miss being part of a team and I loved being a daily part of the Gloucester Road community and seeing you all .

Having a shop full of hundreds of plants was pretty fun too - although with the summer we are having I definitely don’t miss the watering and responsibility.

But not having the 7 day a week commitment of a retail business has opened up so many opportunities. I can choose (mostly) when I work and couldn’t have predicted how popular my plant themed workshops and events have been. You can even come and pick up some floristry skills.

I run my workshops and events all over town and even get to work from home too - swipe to see my new home office 🤣 and I’m super excited to be announcing a brand new super cool venue next week too. So watch this space!

Of course I still sell plants here on Instagram from time to time.

Check in here on 12 August 6pm for our next plant sale!

I’m also at Boston Tea Party, Gloucester Road on Saturday 15 August with my little pop up shop.

If you want to know more about my workshops take a look at my website in my bio.

I also do plant selection boxes too. All the details are on my website - they make fab gifts and you can choose pet friendly, new home or just a celebration or thank you box. All carefully packaged with handwritten care cards and always hand delivered in Bristol and locally.

For a private workshop just send me a message or email - I run sessions from 1 hour taster sessions making mini terrariums (great for a team meeting) to a larger size that you can even make with a friend. I can do a plant care session or even run a fun plant bingo evening.

But it’s not just terrariums. I do pot paint and plant workshops, living succulent wreaths and yes I’m going to say it in August Christmas wreaths!

I’m busy but definitely less stressed 🌱❤️

Fed up with your job? Fancy exploring a change?

Back in 2018 I was commuting to a job in Birmingham working in a pretty stressful environment, managing some challenging health issues and wondering what I wanted to do next. At that point I was 56 and I knew I didn’t want that to be the next 10 years of my career.

My background was in marketing but by that point I really missed the creativity that was in the early days of my job.

After resigning - with no job to go to - I did a few plant and floristry courses - I knew I needed to be working with something I loved. I thought about garden design but at my age I didn’t fancy chilly British winters knee deep in mud. I had a life long love of plants. Particularly houseplants, that started in the 70s. So a plant business seemed a good idea. Then I drove past this place one day on my way back from another hospital appointment. It was a shop selling glass but there was something about it that I knew the space would make an amazing plant shop. And the rest as they say - is history.

Starting Fancy Plants was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I’ve met the best people, worked with some amazing organisations from small start ups and charities to huge organisations like the NHS. Having a shop was full on, scary and brilliant all at the same time. And don’t get me started on Covid and the lockdowns - just one year after we opened.

Anyway here we are still going strong. But Fancy Plants has aged and adapted (like me) and in August last year I closed the shop at the end of our lease and now run workshops, supply to events and do an occasional pop up and fair.

I’ve been so lucky - running a retail business bought plenty of challenges but I wouldn’t change it for anything.

So I guess my message is if you are finding yourself a little adrift, not sure about next steps, why not try something new. You don’t have to resign your job to try something different though.

Our new career change floristry course run by Chelsea award winning florist, Tracy Rowbottom with business sessions from me is a fantastic chance to explore a new idea while learning a new skill.

Time for a change? Message me for more info.

I am sooooo excited to announce our new career change course designed to give you all the tools to set up your own floristry based business from home. I have partnered with my buddy Tracy Rowbottom, award winning florist and local floristry legend!! My words not hers - she’s far too modest to tell you about her 20 years plus experience running a successful floristry business and her bronze, silver AND gold Chelsea Flower Show medals! Over the years Tracy has created displays, arrangements and bouquets for hundreds of weddings and events and now she is bringing that expertise to this new course.

If you have dreamed about a career change and want to work with flowers (and plants) this is the course for you. Tracy will teach you in 4 hands on sessions how to create stunning floral designs working with a lovely selection of fresh flowers and foliage which you will take home with you at the end of each session.

The course is delivered in 4 x 3 hour weekly evening sessions in my new studio ‘The Greenhouse’ in my garden in Brislington. As well as learning how to work with flowers there will be time in each workshop to find out what you need to run your own business. We will cover finance and costing, branding, marketing and social media giving you the tools to start your own floristry business either from home or even in a retail premise. I have over 30 years of business and marketing experience and will be working with you to make sure you have everything you need to start your own business or just work through the pros and cons. There are just 6 places on each course so there will lots of opportunities to discuss and explore your ideas and chat with other like minded people.

Tracy and I will bring all our experience to this practical and fun course. There will also be opportunities for add on sessions too if you want to learn more advanced techniques.

There are two start dates in June and September.

To find out more check out the link in our bio or DM us here for more information. We are happy to answer any questions.

It’s been 7 months since our lease finished at our Gloucester Road shop - and I’ve missed you!!!

I’ve been busy running workshops all over town and setting up my own workshop space ‘The Greenhouse’ in my new garden - I have already booked up several workshops here and I’m loving ‘working from home’ a bit - more on this later.

My plant sales have been here online but I’ve really missed the plant chat!!! And I’ve had a little break over winter.

So when the fabulous Dino invited me to come along to the Bristol Rare Plants and Orchids Fair in April I didn’t take much persuading!

I’m soooo excited - and a little bit nervous! What shall I bring???? So much to choose from. Well I’ll definitely be bringing some interesting plants along and can’t wait to share my love of terrariums with you too. Come and say hi! See you there. It’s going to be a good one!
