FAQ's:

Reusable nappy terms can seem a bit overwhelming when you're in the third trimester with full-blown baby brain! Which is why we're made a printable cheat sheet to help.

Of all the terms, I would say that insert/liner are the two most commonly confused, and understandably so! They're both pieces of material that go in the nappy, but they actually have very different jobs:

Liner - A layer of material used as a barrier between baby's skin and the nappy. This catches the p**p for easy disposal and has NO absorbency. Can be disposable or reusable.

Insert - The absorbent inners used in pocket nappies, these are a rectangular pad shape and are thicker than liners as they are absorbent. Often used interchangeably with booster/soaker nowadays.

I usually talk about helping parents who have already began their cloth nappy journey, being in our little 'reusable nappy bubble' that becomes your life when you have a cloth nappy shop, you feel like anyone and everyone uses cloth nappies. But it's often easy to forget how many parents don't start cloth nappies simply because of misconceptions.

There's so much to consider as a new parent, that it's all to easy to picture old terry towels boiling on the stove and be put off the idea for life, but what is it REALLY like using reusable nappies?

Here's the TOP 9 worries of parents that we hear regularly, and our response. How many of these worries did you have when you first looked into cloth?

GOING ONLINE ONLY - please read!

So as you all probably know, I am selling The Friendly Eco! It's been a complicated few months logistics-wise, but we finally have a plan coming into place with prospective buyers which is very relieving.

From 13th August, we will be moving online for the time being as I cannot juggle everything, but this shouldn't be forever! We do, however, have a few bits and bobs in place to make shopping locally with The Friendly Eco during this time nice and easy! These include FREE local Click & Collect, and £1 local delivery which I will talk more about this coming week!

In order to make the online transition a bit easier, I have a large selection of stock such as display items and older stock which I need to shift, so these will be going on sale in store today! Keep an eye on our stories as there will be some sneak peeks of the best bargains... 👀 I expect the top items will sell veryyyy quickly.

At some point in the next few days I will be doing a Facebook group sale over on The Friendly Eco Hive as well for those who aren't as local, but this will depend on any sale stock leftover after in store sales...

Also to add - Hire kits will continue but free postage will be added to them, meaning you can just drop them off at your local parcel shop! Anyone with hire kits currently will receive an email shortly with a prepaid label for returning their kit - you don't need a printer for this as it can be done at your drop off point!

✨VELCRO CLEANING HACK!

Forgetting to do the laundry tabs up a few too many times can result in clogged applix which doesn’t like to stick. Fortunately there’s an easy way to fix this - a metal nit comb! Honestly just a few passes of the comb and the majority of the fluff will be lifted away.

With the added benefit of being multi-use and plastic free, they’re a pretty sustainable answer to your Velcro problem too!

How often do you clean your machine?

Whether you use reusable nappies or disposables, it's best practice to clean your washing machine every month - and it's much easier than you'd think!

Why clean your machine?
⏲️ It prolongs the life if your washing machine, enabling you to fix problems such as clogged filters before they escalate.
🧺 Cleaner clothes - washing your clothes/nappies in a machine that hasn't been cleaned in a long time probably doesn't clean them as well as you'd think...
🎁 Find hidden treasure - wondering where that button went off your shirt? Missing a fiver? It's probably in the filter!

How do I clean my machine?
🧼 Check machine is empty and wipe down the inside, including under the rubber seal.
🧻 Locate filter at the bottom of your machine (you may have to pop open a little panel with a butter knife) and place a towel down just in case!
✨ Unscrew and (hopefully) discover some hidden gems! Then wash the filter off in the sink.
🧽 Remove and clean the detergent drawer in the sink with a little washing up liquid.
🔥 Put back together and run a 90 degree Celsius wash with no detergent, then you're done!

I can hands-down say that this is THE most commonly asked question by skeptical parents!

It makes sense - once baby's p**ped, what happens? It's much simpler than you'd think...

Milk-fed p**ps are just milk anyway! They're liquid so they're ready to be washed. If baby is on solids then just shake the p**p into the toilet and flush. You don't need to get every last bit, just the bulk of it, and you can use a disposable liner if you want to make life even easier! Store your nappies exactly as they are in a wet bag or dry nappy bucket.

Then on wash day (every 3 days) stick the nappies in the washing machine on a rinse cycle, meaning no rinsing by hand unless you really want to. Once this is done you top up with baby clothes and other bits and bobs, and stick on a long wash at 40 or 60 degrees with regular powder detergent, nothing fancy!

One dry just hang up to air dry, use a heated airer, or tumble dry on low.

Have you used cloth nappies on two babies at the same time?

We've got first-hand experience at The Friendly Eco! Our children are just 20 months apart in age, meaning that there was an overlap of a fair few months where both were in nappies at the same time.

Here's my experience of 2 in nappies:

🧺 There was no extra workload for washing, I was still washing every 3 days - just more nappies were being washed each time. I found upgrading from a little nappy bucket to a larger bin useful, which I lined with the cheeky wipes pail liner for easy emptying.

✨ If the babies are on different rises, you can either dedicate half a stash each to them, or just switch the rises with each change. I'm bad at planning ahead so did the latter! Half the time the nappy was the correct rise already which was a win in my books. 😂

👯 Take EVERY opportunity to match those nappies because it is ADORABLE, even if one p**ps immediately after - it's worth that photo. I wish I had done it more as most brands have newborn and one size nappies available in the same prints.

If you have had two or more in nappies at once, let me know your top tips! Equally , if you're expecting two in nappies - ask away!
