It's the last day of British Flowers Week and today we celebrate the creatures that live alongside the flowers - some just enjoy the nectar and pollen or help with our growing in various ways - here's to the bees, butterflies, ladybugs, and worms. Maybe a little less celebration of the aphids, goats, mice, voles and flea beetles ..... but creating habitats for biodiversity is another part of why we do what we do and it's more important than ever.

💐 WIN FLOWERS THIS WEEK! DETAILS BELOW 💐

Day 4 of British Flowers Week 😊

We're often asked where we grow our flowers - it's no longer just in our gardens!

We have two growing sites near Fishponds, Bristol - a 1/4 acre field a few miles north of Bristol (first three pics) that we turned from an old horse paddock into 29 x 12 meter long 'no dig' beds, layering cardboard, manure and compost on top of the field for each bed. We're aiming to use this site more for perennials and foliage and are slowly getting there - though this year the weeds are also giving us a good run for our money. 😣

The second site (pics 4 onwards) is a set of polytunnels closer to home near Fishponds that we have recently re-covered and brought back to life via a similar process except these needed forking over to loosen up the compacted soil. The tunnels are now where we do seed sowing and propagation and grow varieties across the year like ranunculus, sweet peas and roses. The smell at this time of year is immense!

We're thinking about offering cut your own flower opportunities at one or both of the sites so if you are interested in that let us know and we'll notify you if we do! ✂️🌻🌱

Day 3 of British Flowers Week!

Our usual posts are full of flowers, the fields and the farm and not so much the farmers. I think it's safe to say we're not very keen or comfortable putting ourselves on the front page - but you can't celebrate British flowers without celebrating the growers!

So a little about us - we're Fiona and Alison, neighbors, friends and co-owners of Fishponds Flowers for the past 10 years. 👩🏼‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾

Most days (and mornings and evenings!) you'll find us planting, weeding, wheeling, cutting, shoveling, arranging, delivering, emailing, giving talks about flowers, planning, spreadsheeting and very likely yawning by the end of the day. 😂

It can be a relentless business especially at this time of year, and we couldn't do it without our wonderful volunteers who help out, the network of growers we learn from (esp Flowers From the Farm) and our families who support us and maneuver around vast quantities of flowers at home. 🫣

As tough as it can be, we keep on growing as we're both deeply passionate about the quality and value of British flowers and also love the gentle but powerful joy and hope they bring to the communities we're part of.

💐🌸🌱 FLOWER PRIZE DRAW THIS WEEK 🌱🌸💐

It's day 2 of British Flowers Week this week - a nation-wide chance to celebrate British flowers.

There are so many reasons to choose locally grown flowers - one of the closest to our heart and reasons we started this business is the way they provide a practical response to climate change.

When compared to imported flowers, locally grown flowers like ours...

🌻 have a substantially lower carbon footprint from field to vase
🌻 use much less energy for transportation
🌻 avoid chemical preservatives or pesticides
🌻 contribute to local biodiversity

And they also connect us to our natural landscape, the seasons we live in, and the processes of the products we use - all sorely needed at the moment. And they do it in a pretty and gentle way .... definitely worth celebrating.

It's summer wedding season and we loved growing, cutting and putting together these fantastically vibrant flowers for J and T last month.

We love working with customers who want local, seasonal flowers - and are happy when we tell them we can't guarantee *exactly what flowers* we'll have because they know what we use will be fresh as can be, delicate and unusual and in step with the time of the year.

These words from the happy couple make it all worthwhile.......

Bright vibrant bounty on the flower field at the moment - large campanula bells, sweet smelling sweet williams, cornflowers, peonies, and the delicacies of nigella and larkspur just starting.

It's a busy time of year for us, made even more so with the everchanging weather and extreme heat last week which brought into bloom lots and lots of flowers. On the one hand that's great because we've gotta lots of weddings and events too that we need them for 🤝 but it also means that some go over too quickly or flower early or go to waste ... big problems especially for the bigger growers. While our posts might be mostly of beauties and loveliness, it's also a tough and unpredictable time to be a grower. Please support local when you can!

It's HOT HOT HOT! The sweet peas and roses seem to be loving the heat ....

But it does mean we're watering our little socks off so they can stay alive to love it. Fiona was heroically down at the tunnels early enough this morning to see the sun rise and catch these pretty shots!

Chandos Beauty living up to its name! These roses are loving the polytunnel this year. Lots of aphids also loving these roses but thankfully the ladybirds we introduced are loving the aphids too! 🐞🪲😅

We're entering that wonderful time of the growing year where the flower bunches go all lush and vibrant and meadowy - and the scents also begin in earnest with sweet peas and mints and sweet williams.

These were picked from our fields and wrapped up yesterday - you can pick up a bunch for the weekend at or - or contact us directly for any bespoke orders 😊
