๐๐ Indoor Aquarium Care During the Heatwave ๐ ๐
With temperatures reaching high again, weโve had lots of people asking for hints and tips on keeping fish cool โ so hereโs an indoor aquarium version to help protect your fish and plants during this extreme heat.
High room temperatures can quickly warm up your tank, reduce oxygen levels, and stress your fish, so itโs important to act early.
Here are some simple ways to help:
โ
Keep filters & pumps fully working
Ensure your filter is clean and running efficiently. Good water circulation is vital for maintaining stable temperatures and oxygen levels โ especially in hot weather.
๐จ Increase oxygen levels
Warmer water holds less oxygen, so extra aeration is key. You can:
Add an air pump with air stones
Lower the water level slightly to increase filter outlet splash
Angle your filter outlet to create more surface movement
๐ฌ Cool the tank gently
Open the lid slightly (if safe) to allow heat to escape
Use a fan blowing across the water surface to encourage cooling through evaporation
Keep tanks away from direct sunlight and hot rooms
โ๏ธ โ ๏ธ Avoid using ice to cool your tank
It might seem like a quick fix, but adding ice or frozen water can cause rapid temperature swings, which can shock or even kill fish. It can also create uneven temperature zones in the tank. Slow, gradual cooling is always much safer.
๐ง Top up with care
Adding small amounts of cooler (dechlorinated) water can help, but avoid sudden large changes that can stress your fish.
๐งผ Stay on top of maintenance
Check equipment regularly, remove waste, and ensure everything is running smoothly throughout the heatwave.
Keeping your aquarium stable, well-oxygenated, and gradually cooled is the key to healthy fish during extreme temperatures. Stay cool and keep your tanks thriving! ๐ฟ๐
