Our reputation for great tasting products comes from our traditional craft skilled approach to baking. Like his father before him, David Goodfellow was a Dundee baker who, in his early 20s, went to work in his Uncle Stewart Goodfellow’s bakery in Broughty Ferry. There, he met and fell in love with young Margaret Steven, herself only recently having moved to Broughty Ferry from Blairgowrie. He work
ed in the bakery and she in the shop. Together, they saw the opportunities for business in Dundee’s rapidly expanding suburb, and felt they could do a better job than Uncle Stewart, so they decided to set up on their own. With money borrowed from Margaret’s uncle, they opened their new shop at 79 Gray Street in Broughty Ferry, renting the bakery behind. With that, the Goodfellow & Steven business partnership was born! They soon became well known for David’s most excellent pies, pastries, cakes and celebration cakes in Broughty Ferry, with excellent customer service provided by Margaret (who had a strong business head on her- kind, but took no nonsense!). In a whirlwind of success, within just a few years, they had got married, purchased and moved to a much larger shop on the same street (still our flagship shop), started a family and moved to the spacious flat above the shop (where I am writing this). In addition, they expanded their bakery, started a catering business and purchased one of those new motorised delivery vehicles (in an era when that was really a BIG deal)! Many of our recipes are still the same as they were a hundred and twenty years ago (and probably much earlier as our family have been bakers since at least the 1700s), and we still maintain the quality of our products and service to the same high standard.
