π£ Targeting Tope from the Shore β Get Your Tackle Right! π¦
When you're chasing one of the hardest-fighting fish in UK waters, your tackle needs to be up to the job. Here's the setup I trust:
π£ Rods - beach casters, something up to the job and reliable
Zulcron XT 435
Zziplex HST
Century T1000
βοΈ Reels A strong, reliable reel is essential. Penn Fathoms, Daiwa Saltists, or a quality fixed spool with plenty of cranking power and a solid gear system will all do the job.
𧡠Main Line I tend to use 18lb Varivas Yellow Sport thanks to its low diameter for maximum casting distance, but any quality 18lb+ mono will work. If you're fishing rough ground, don't be afraid to step up in strength.
π Shock Leader Match your leader to your casting weight and casting power. I recommend 100lb leader material for abrasion resistance and the confidence to put a big bait out safely.
πͺ Rigs Keep it simple:
Heavy pulley pennels
Pulley dongle rigs
Wire bite trace (essential)
Finish them with strong 8/0 circle hooks, octopus hooks or J-hooks.
β Leads Choose a lead big enough to match your bait. If the lead is too light, large baits will spin during the cast and cost you valuable distance. Grippleads are my go-to for holding bottom and ensuring solid hook-ups.
π Baits Fresh is always best!
Half mackerel
Double squid
Herring
Sardines
Bluey
Secure every bait tightly with plenty of bait elastic or latex to keep it streamlined during the cast.
π Conditions Matter Tope are often at their best around the flooding tide and high water, especially where deep channels or gullies are within casting range. A gentle to moderate swell can help, but always put safety first. Many anglers also find fishing improves during falling or lower atmospheric pressure ahead of a weather front, as it can encourage fish to feed more actively. Always check the latest tide and marine forecast before heading out.
πͺ Get your tackle right, fish fresh bait with confidence, and when that rod hoops over... hold on tight!
Tight lines and good luck! π£π¦
