Chris’s Book of the week-Mary Beard, Talking Classics, The shock of the old 📖📚

As a huge fan of Mary Beard, and rating her book, SPQR, in my top 10 books of all time, I was excited at a new book from her, and wasn’t disappointed.

As much as it’s got its great historical reference, this book stands more for the defence of the classics.

To truly appreciate them in these times, we need to see the importance of the classics today, and their link between the ancient and the modern world.

The Odyssey is a poem of extraordinary pleasures: it is a salt-caked, storm-tossed, wine-dark treasury of tales, of many twists and turns, like life itself.

The epic tale of Odysseus and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War forms one of the earliest and greatest works of Western literature.

The Odyssey was the very first Penguin Classic to be published, and has itself achieved classic status.
