This week is BANNED BOOKS WEEK, created in response to the surge in recent years in the number of challenges to books in Libraries, Education and Bookshops. I have personally met with booksellers from the USA who fully expect to be jailed in the coming months for refusing to stop selling books on sexual health. It is not only books that promote racial and sexual equality and support the LGBTQ community, the banned books list includes Charlottes Web for promoting witchcraft - talking animals - Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and The Hobbit. Whilst this is mainly a problem in the USA it is creeping into our lives here in the UK with booksellers reporting verbal and physical violence from far right activists for selling books that are not in line with their extreme views. The freedom to read is under attack, which means democracy is under attack. Censorship wont stop at books.
