Week one of back to school done. It feels like it’s been a loooong week. Everyone at Caroline’s Beautiful Books HQ has been missing the holidays and the slower pace they bring.

It’s been such a murky day that we prioritised some family time ♥️, starting with snuggling up with our current family book. We are all completely hooked on this one; beautifully written, gorgeous illustrations and we just can’t predict what’s going to happen next to Marinka, Benjamin, Jack and House! A snuggle, a coffee and 4 chapters later it was sadly time to start the day properly - but we managed to end the day with one more chapter before bed 😴

🤓There’s so much science behind the benefits of reading aloud with your child, even when they’re proficient readers themselves. It is definitely one of my favourite things to do and “one more chapter!” is one of my favourite sentences to hear!

I might be trying to desperately eek out the last few hours of the summer holidays, but there is no denying that Autumn is just around the corner 😱🍁
I definitely can’t ignore it as the September new titles are here - and they have a distinctly spooky vibe 👻 🎃
My young reader will be eyeing up See Inside the Paranormal, but the latest addition to the 100 Things to Know series is much more my thing 🤣
The book I am most excited to get my hands on this month is Sophie Anderson’s A Year Of Fairy Tales. If you haven’t discovered her wonderful stories yet, I can’t recommend them highly enough. Our family bedtime book is The House With Chicken Legs Runs Away which we are all completely captivated by!

The anticipation of what a new week will bring…

It’s the last full week of the summer holidays at Caroline’s Beautiful Books HQ and it’s going to be a busy one!

Batch cooking to make pack lunches and dinners run a little smoother once we’re back to our term time routine, uploading and sorting the photos from the holidays and checking the school uniform still fits (🤞) are all priorities. We still have a couple of holiday activities to look forward to as well.

Aside from family time, I’m really excited to have some time and brain space to work on my business this week. I’ve got some events to plan for, stock to sort and planning for 🎄 - I said the C word!

Good things are definitely coming! Hair is up, coffee made and ready to go!

I’ve always preferred to be an observer, taking things in, never wanting to be the focus. I’ve been scared to try new things. This summer I’ve made a huge effort, moving out of my comfort zone to try things that I always thought were ‘too hard’.

This weekend has been my biggest challenge. My 8 year old really wanted to go camping, but the practicalities (kit, traipsing across a field in the night for a wee, the unknown etc) have always been too much of a barrier.

This weekend I bit the bullet & we went to a Mini Fest. It was completely fantastic! We did need to traipse across the field in the night for a wee - but the stars were incredible! We tried so many things - quality family time together with no need for screens. The cliché of making memories together firmly ticked.

Last night really made me think. I love to dance (at the back) & my son LOVES to dance -with none of my self consciousness! The band were fab. We began dancing together at the back, but he wanted to be closer to the stage. A few minutes later he was at the very front, fully immersed in the music & wanting me to join him from the side. I didn’t want to let him down, so I did. Sounds simple but felt huge. There I was, crazy dancing, front & centre - something I’ve never done before. As the set continued & no one was staring or mocking me (as per my critical inner voice) I relaxed & started to enjoy myself (no photos exist of this as we were completely in the moment). The best bit though? Seeing my son beam as we danced together. That is imprinted on my brain & in my heart ♥️

I couldn’t get back to sleep after my nighttime wander/ star gazing experience. My brain was buzzing with how much we are constrained by worry, feeling scared or our inner voice. What happens if we stop listening to them - even briefly?

A woman much wiser than me recently told me “nothing changes if nothing changes Caroline”. Lots of things feel like they’ve changed this summer. I still don’t want to be the focus, but I can do things that feel hard; I can push myself out of my comfort zone & I don’t have to listen to my inner critic quite so strongly.

Maybe that’s true for all of us?

🎉 So today I made the decision to invest in my business and I’m so glad I did!

☺️ I met 4 other brilliant women running their own businesses their way, and I’ve come home feeling thoroughly inspired and buzzing with ideas and plans that I can’t wait to get cracking on over the next few weeks.

Thank you to Sue Pittman for a wonderful CEO day full of inspiration, knowledge sharing and words of wisdom - and a delicious lunch! 😋
