Whilst our Surveyors are enjoying the countryside in Leeds on a Monday afternoon, we can’t help but think about the risks of living out in the open, if this is you, there may be a few things you may want to consider:
1. Secure Doors and Windows
Ensure all external doors have quality locks and that windows are secured, especially those out of sight at the rear or sides of the property. Remember: most break-ins still occur through unlocked doors or windows.
2. Install CCTV
Visible CCTV cameras can act as a strong deterrent and provide valuable evidence if an incident occurs. Most systems also allow you to view footage remotely from your phone.
3. Use Outdoor Lighting
Motion-activated security lighting around entrances, driveways, garages, and outbuildings can deter intruders and alert you to activity around the property.
4. Protect Outbuildings
Sheds, workshops, stables, and garages often contain valuable tools and equipment. Fit robust locks and consider alarms or CCTV coverage for these areas too.
5. Keep Valuables Out of Sight
Avoid leaving expensive machinery, tools, bicycles, or vehicles visible from public roads or footpaths. Secure them whenever possible.
6. Maintain Boundaries
Well-maintained gates, fences, hedges, and entrances help define your property and make unauthorised access more difficult.
7. Consider a Monitored Alarm System
A professionally installed intruder alarm can provide early warning of a break-in and, when monitored, ensure a rapid response if activation occurs.
