MEET KAY “HOUGIE” RUTTER ✂️❤️

If you’re into papercraft, there’s a very good chance you already know the name Kay Rutter.

If you don’t… allow me. 😂

Kay has been designing, demonstrating and teaching papercraft for years and is the inventor of the Hougie Board — yes, that bright green scoring board that found its way into craft rooms all over the country.

She’s demonstrated the Hougie Board on Create & Craft, produced her own Hougie project books and taught at craft shows and workshops around the UK. Back in 2011 she was actually billed at a Craft Extravaganza as “Kay Rutter, Hougie Board inventor”, alongside some very familiar names from the craft-TV world.

Basically, Kay knows what can be done with a piece of card. 😂

And we’re rather delighted that you can now come and learn from her right here at The Galleria. ❤️

Kay has some brilliant workshops coming up:

✂️ FRIDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER | 10AM–1PM
Learn How to Make Any Size Box – £25

First you’ll create a beautiful 3D card, then Kay will teach you how to work out and construct exactly the right sized box to fit it.

Once you’ve learnt the technique, you’re not limited to that project — you’ll have the knowledge to make boxes in whatever size you need in future.

📐 Inventing scoring boards apparently wasn’t enough. Now she’s teaching us box mathematics. 😂

✂️ FRIDAY 9TH OCTOBER | 10AM–1PM
The Same But Different

This one is all about learning card construction rather than spending the whole workshop decorating.

You’ll make as many different card structures as possible, working from the same construction technique in different ways, and leave with loads of templates so you can recreate them at home using your own favourite stash.

🎄 FRIDAY 6TH NOVEMBER | 10AM–1PM
Christmas Hexagon Box

Learn to make the gorgeous hexagonal Christmas box — without cutting dies. Just a scoreboard, basic tools and the woman who knows rather a lot about scoring things. 😂

Don’t have a centimetre scoreboard? Don’t worry — workshop ones will be available to use.

So whether you’ve been papercrafting for years, have an original Hougie Board lurking somewhere in your craft room, or haven’t got the foggiest idea what a scoring board is yet…

this is your chance to learn from the woman who invented one. ❤️

And I think that’s pretty bloody cool.

🧵 SIX WOMEN WALKED INTO THE GALLERIA…

On Thursday evening just gone

Three hours later, six women walked back out wearing kimonos they’d made themselves. 😂👏

Which is frankly showing off.

No weeks of lessons.
No mysterious sewing qualifications.
No sacrificing anything to the sewing machine gods.

Just one evening with Sharon, a pile of fabric, a sewing machine and the occasional “Hang on… I’ve actually MADE this?!” 😍

And LOOK at them. 👏

This is exactly why I love our sewing workshops. You can arrive thinking “I’m not sure I’ll be able to do this…” and leave wearing actual clothing that you created yourself.

Although Sharon has somehow lost photographic evidence of one of the six kimonos. 😂

So officially:

👗 6 ladies
🧵 6 handmade kimonos
📸 5 accounted for photographically
😂 1 currently existing only in Galleria folklore

Absolutely brilliant work ladies. ❤️

And if you’ve been watching our sewing workshops thinking “I could never make that”…

Apparently, you bloody well can. 🧵👏

🐢 SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE CRAFTING RACE…

Especially when you’ve got three Tuesday evenings, a pile of beautiful embellishments and potentially a chippy tea. 😂

Over three relaxed evenings with JM Creative Crafts, you’ll make your own felt turtle and slowly transform its shell with beads, buttons, charms, shells and all sorts of little treasures.

And this is the lovely bit ❤️
You can bring along meaningful little pieces from home to stitch into your turtle too — old jewellery, buttons, charms or tiny keepsakes — turning it into something completely personal.

📅 Tuesdays 1st, 8th & 15th September
⏰ 6–9pm
💷 £90 for all THREE evenings
🧵 All materials included
🐢 Complete beginners very welcome

We’ll be setting up from 5.30pm, so feel free to arrive early with a chippy tea and settle in.

Basically:

Three evenings away from real life.
One increasingly overdressed turtle.
Tea, crafting and good company.
And absolutely no requirement to have the faintest idea what you’re doing before you arrive. 😂

✂️ THE SAME… BUT DIFFERENT! ✂️

This one is for anyone who loves card making but has reached the point where every piece of card is looking suspiciously rectangular. 😂

Join Kay “Hougie” Rutter for a morning learning clever card construction techniques that can be used to create loads of completely different shaped cards.

And this workshop is a little different…

You’re not spending three hours painstakingly decorating one card.

Instead, Kay will get you making as many different card structures as possible in the time available, so you can concentrate on learning how they work.

Even better, you’ll leave with loads of templates to take home, ready to raid your favourite craft stash and recreate them again and again. 🙌

And considering Kay is the woman who invented the Hougie Board, I think we can safely say she knows a thing or two about what can be achieved by strategically folding bits of card. 😂

📅 Friday 9th October
⏰ 10am–1pm
📍 The Galleria, Burton Latimer

One technique.
Loads of possibilities.
And a perfectly legitimate excuse to finally use the craft stash you’ve been “saving”. 👀😂

🧶 MEET CATHERINE — OUR KNITTING TUTOR 🧶

Kettering born and bred, lover of colour, lover of vintage and casually bringing 55+ YEARS of knitting experience to The Galleria. 😳🧶

Which means Catherine has probably forgotten more about knitting than I will ever know.

She’s here for complete beginners, people who vaguely remember someone teaching them years ago, and those who can already knit but would love to learn more, improve their skills or simply spend a few hours surrounded by yarn and good company.

And in true Galleria tradition, there’s absolutely no requirement to arrive knowing anybody — or knowing what on earth you’re doing. 😂

Just bring yourself.

Catherine provides the knitting expertise.

I provide the tea, occasional interference and absolutely no useful knitting knowledge whatsoever. 🤣

55+ years of knitting and still going strong — we’re very lucky to have her. ❤️🧶

🍂 YOU CHOOSE OCTOBER! 🍂

We’re putting an October willow workshop in the diary… but what are we making?

I’m handing this decision over to you lot, which frankly feels reckless. 😂
