Apple Tree Holding

Apple Tree Holding Come walk with me and experience life in an English village, deeply connected to the land and how it nurtures us in every way.

We keep a small selection of traditional British breeds, all of which are classified as “Rare Breeds” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. These rare breeds can provide specific genetic features in the commercial world of animal husbandry so it is important they remain available to that world. However, they are not commercially viable and so their survival is reliant on hobby farmers and smallholders like us to keep breeding them.

Join me for milking this morning!

It's 1st August and we have had no rain of any worth since June. The English Goats are doing well in spite of the heat and drought. We are giving the two nannies extra feed at milking time as they are still feeding their kids. We have also been gifted some willow from a local tree surgeon which is helping a lot.

Fillippa gave 0.9 litres of milk and Eliza gave 1.1 litres of milk this morning. Double that number for an estimated daily yield.

I think we can safely say there's not much nutritional value in here. The goats are seeking out browse now (tree branches, vegetables, windfall apples) and are having to supplement it all with the last of last year's hay. And we're in the middle of another heatwave this week!

Look at those beards! Spotlight on Arthur and Pearmain today. Both superb examples of English billy goats.
Read's Arthur from up the road. Now 2 years old.
Kenside Pearmain from Scotland. Now 15 months old.
Both at stud here at Apple Tree Holding.

Primitive markings... both Laima and our goats exhibit Primitive markings. You can see how well camouflaged the dog is and likewise the goats disappear into the burnt off grass too.

The girls are certainly tucking into the goat willow this month. The sweetness is going from the grass and the English Goats start looking for alternative nutritional sources. One of their favourites is willow and goat willow (Salix caprea) in particular. It coppices well so we have an endless supply.

Pearmain, are you enjoying that orange?

For anyone who wonders how difficult it might be to get English Goats to do what you want, watch this and switch the sound on!
I never worry about moving the goats. Sheep on the other hand.... they can take days to get in (especially when you are in a rush).
