Hi parents,

Does your child’s music tutor offer real performance opportunities?

Before founding GTB Music School, I performed professionally in a wide range of settings and venues.

I quickly discovered that what I had learnt in the practice room did not fully prepare me for the real thing.

At GTB Music School, we give students real performance opportunities as early as possible.

✅ Proper stage
✅ Professional sound crew
✅ Videography
✅ Photography
✅ Support crew

And, of course, catering, because who doesn’t love cookies and popcorn at a concert?

For me, it was only when I started performing in front of real audiences that I really “got it”.

Our mission is to help your child get there sooner.

It is not about being perfect. It is about getting involved, building confidence and feeling the buzz of a proper performance.

Mums and dads,

Does your child learn an instrument?

This Sunday is our 4th End-of-Year Student Concert, and for us and our students, it’s the highlight of the year.

At GTB Music School, we don’t do half measures.

We hire a proper venue, with a proper stage. We bring in a professional sound engineer, photographer and videographer. We also have support staff helping with catering, tuning instruments and making sure students are ready to go on stage feeling calm and confident.

For me, the way I felt about music changed forever when I started performing.

It felt exciting.
It felt purposeful.
It felt like I finally understood what it was all about.

That’s why we believe students should have performance opportunities right from the start, not just when they’re already “advanced”.

They love it.

And the cookies don’t hurt either!

15/06/2026

Hi parents,
If you’re looking for music lessons for your child, one of the first questions to consider is whether you should stay at home and have the tutor come to you, or go to a studio for lessons.

As always, there are pros and cons to both options.

These are the sorts of things we discuss with parents as part of the enquiry process, so we can help organise the right lessons for each family.

Price
Let’s start with the obvious one. Price.

Lesson prices in NW London and SW Herts vary greatly between tutors and music schools. However, as a general guide, at-home lessons are often around £10 to £20 more expensive than lessons at a music school or in the tutor’s home.

So the question is often:
Would you rather save the money, or save the time?
There is genuinely an argument for both.

Home tuition is very popular with our families. Parents often say they’d rather get dinner on and not have to put the whole family in the car.

Others are happy to get out of the house and don’t mind the journey.

Location
Depending on where you live, there may not be a good music tutor near you.

This is especially true in affluent suburbs. Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen a lot of tutors move out of the area, with many now teaching online or travelling in for lessons.
If you have a good tutor near you, great.

If not, unless you’re prepared for a one-hour round trip, home tuition may be the better option.

Tutor experience
Historically, most established, in-demand tutors do not offer home visits.

That doesn’t mean good home tutors don’t exist, but it does mean you need to look carefully at the tutor’s quality, experience and track record, and may pay quite a bit more.

One thing to ask any provider is whether all tutors are priced the same, or whether the price reflects the tutor’s level of experience.

A single price can be simpler, but it may also limit the range of tutors available. A tiered system can give families more choice, with some opting for the most affordable suitable tutor, and others choosing to pay more for someone with a longer track record and stronger experience.

The point is not that one option is always better. It’s about finding the right balance between budget, convenience and tutor experience, as well as someone with an approach that is right for your child.

Groups vs one-to-one
Home tuition usually means one-to-one lessons.

Studio-based lessons may provide more options, including group classes, depending on the provider.

This can be especially helpful for younger beginners, as children often enjoy learning alongside others and having the opportunity to play music as part of a group.

Focus
Where does your child work best?
Are they more relaxed and focused at home, or would lessons in a professional setting be more productive?

This can depend on siblings, noise levels and the layout of the house. Some students find it harder to focus in a busy or open-plan home.

For other children, being at home helps them feel relaxed, confident and ready to learn.

What next
I hope this has been useful and given you some helpful things to think about, whoever you choose to learn with.

At GTB Music School, we offer music lessons for children in your home, in our studios and online, including guitar, piano, drums and more.

Is your child struggling to choose between learning piano or guitar?

Sometimes children know exactly what instrument they want to learn.

Other times, they’re not too sure, and often parents aren’t sure either.

Choosing an instrument is a big decision. It’s an investment in time, money and energy, so it’s worth thinking it through properly.

The good news is that there isn’t really a bad choice.

Any instrument can help a child explore music, build confidence, perform in front of others and enjoy playing as part of a group.

If your child already feels strongly drawn to piano or guitar, I’d usually follow that instinct. A child who is excited about their instrument is much more likely to practise and stick with it.

But if they’re genuinely unsure, there are a few things to consider.

First, what sort of music do they like?

Both piano and guitar are incredibly versatile, but if your child loves rock music, guitar might feel like the more natural choice. If they love classical music, piano may be the obvious starting point.

Of course, there is plenty of crossover. You can play rock piano, classical guitar and almost everything in between.

Guitar students can also take graded exams, including rock guitar exams, so wanting a structured pathway doesn’t mean guitar is the wrong choice.

Price and space matter too.

A decent beginner guitar is often available for around £150, although children may need to move up in size as they grow. With piano, it is possible to start with a basic keyboard, but fairly soon most students will benefit from a better digital piano with weighted keys. That is usually more expensive and takes up more space at home.

Age is another factor.

Every child is different, but in general, children under 6 often find piano easier to start with. On piano, one finger can play one note very quickly.

Guitar is more physically demanding at the beginning. Children need to coordinate both hands, press the strings clearly, and manage movements that can feel quite unforgiving at first.

I’m a guitarist, so admittedly bias, but I do think piano and guitar are both excellent first instruments as they help children understand harmony, as well as melody and rhythm.

So, if your child is choosing between the two, I’d think about:
What music do they love?

How old are they?

How much space do you have at home?

What budget feels realistic?

Which instrument are they most excited about?

Did your child struggle to choose between piano, guitar or another instrument?

How did you decide?

Thank you so much, Anamika, for this lovely review.

It was a pleasure helping your son prepare for the first round of the South West Herts 11 plus music aptitude test. I’m really pleased to hear that he enjoyed the workshop and found the feedback helpful.

Our 11+ music workshops are designed to give children clear practice, constructive feedback and a better understanding of how to keep improving after the session.

Alongside our half-term workshops, we also offer:

🎵 One-to-one support
🎵 Digital mock tests
🎵 Feedback and preparation for the first round
🎵 Guidance from experienced music teachers

Since 2019, we’ve helped over 100 students pass the first round of the 11+ Music Aptitude Test.
