I find strip maps absolutely fascinating- this one has just sold so thought I’d do a little video about it before I pack it up and wave goodbye (excuse the very bad filming - not my strong point!)

I remember as a child watching my dad plan out routes he had to take for work. He’d sit there with an A to Z and write out a list of turnings to make then tape it to his dashboard. I think I had a few years of doing the same thing when I first started having to drive places for work (showing my age there). I guess these maps are the 17th century equivalent - much easier to have a simple route to follow than having to stop and consult a map all the time. They’re so beautifully drawn as well. There are a lot of familiar places to me in this one as it travels through Derbyshire, though I do especially like the bit where the only landmark is ‘a rock’.

Hopefully this one will be enjoyed by its new owner.

Here’s a little video of my latest project - a vintage oval side table with a lovely curvy shape, with lots of curves in the design. Painted using with a subtle crackle finish and finished with white wax for a soft lived in look.
I’ve been having trouble getting the colours to show accurately in photos but this video is a fairly good representation I think.

I was talking to a customer the other day and she said something along the lines of ‘it must be really difficult parting with things’, and that got me thinking about all the things I wish I’d kept, or probably would have kept if I didn’t have a mortgage to pay, a wine habit to fund etc. There are lots of pieces I fall in love with, but I try not to get attached to them (even if a few do accidentally find their way home with me, even if only temporarily). I’ve put together a collection of the ones I probably would have kept if space and finances allowed.
Art is the hardest thing to resist for me - the theatre posters and the woodblock print are probably the things I regret selling the most as I could have made space for them at home, but decided to be strict with myself, and I do regret it a bit. But, there’s always something new to fall in love with, so maybe next time that something comes along I will give in and keep it for myself.

American rocking chairs have never really done it for me - not sure why. However my mum really likes them and bought this one for herself but then ultimately had nowhere to put it. The upholstery was in a bad way so I decided to try giving it a new lease of life by recovering it, and I must admit that I rather like how it’s turned out! Slightly regretted using decorative nails after the first hundred or so though… 😬

Another very nice piece of antique pine furniture today in the form of a 19th century pitch pine glazed bookcase. Quite a ‘formal’ design but softened by the material I think, so would work in a cottage (which is where it has spent the last 50 years) or in a larger proportioned Georgian or Victorian house. At 6’ wide and with seven good size drawers, this antique pine dresser base offers lots of useful storage, as well as being rather handsome. Ideal for a country kitchen or dining room. It came from a local cottage where it had spent the last fifty years or so and has obviously been well loved and cared for throughout its life as it’s in really nice condition, with a great colour and a nice level of wear. I’ve just got back from a rather wet and cold 10 days on the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Arran where I’ve had 4 layers on most of the time so am now feeling very hot back at home! So back to work, and we have a near pair of Victorian mahogany side tables, both from the same local house. Both in good condition and with lots of lovely details. I can’t fit them both in my little photography area unfortunately but the first two photos show each one.

Just thought I’d share the Over Haddon welldressing, which my mum always helps make. This years theme is British wildlife. The beautiful design was created by a lady in the village. It is then traced onto the clay set into the boards, then the lines are picked out with wool. The areas are then filled in with natural materials such as petals, bark and wool (there are even some mussel shells included in this one). Well dressings are an ancient Derbyshire tradition to bless the village well. Villages do it all themselves and it takes about a week. In mild weather it will last for upto a week, but unfortunately this heat will dry the clay base out and it will start to deteriorate much sooner. But they are gorgeous while they last and any money donated or raised through sales of tea and cake (always excellent) in the village hall goes to charity 😊

This vintage chair has a nice shape but is made of a mixture of pine and beech with a not very nice finish, so I’ve (hopefully) given it an update with a folk art style paint job. I’ve tried not to get bogged down in the details with this one (which I’m prone to doing) and am quite pleased with how it’s turned out. It was going to be monochrome but couldn’t resist a bit of red in the end!
