The trilogy engagement ring has been around for well over a century, and its meaning is probably one of the reasons it has remained such an enduring choice.

Three gemstones, traditionally said to represent your past, present and future together.

But a trilogy ring certainly doesn’t have to look traditional.

These ten rings all follow the same basic idea: the three gemstones. Yet change the shape, colour and combination of gemstones, their proportions or the way they are set, and the result can be completely different.

From diamonds to sapphires, beautifully balanced matching gemstones to more unusual combinations, there are so many ways to make a trilogy ring unique.

So if you love the meaning behind it, but want a ring that feels very much like you, you're not restricted to a specific style.

Are you planning on "popping" the question? How you propose is almost as personal as the ring.

Some people would love the full fanfare. A weekend away, somewhere beautiful, perhaps family and friends involved, and a celebration already planned for afterwards.

For someone else, that would be far too much. They'd want it to be private. At home, on a favourite walk, over dinner, or somewhere that already means something to you both.

And then there are the proposals that start with a plan and end up happening completely differently because the moment suddenly feels right.

If you're planning to propose, think about them rather than what you think a proposal is supposed to look like. It's so easy to get caught up in others' ideas.

Would they want everyone to know what's about to happen? Would they love the surprise? Would they want photographs, ch*****ne and people waiting to celebrate? Or would they want that moment to belong to just the two of you?

After all, you're probably the person who knows the answer better than anyone.

What would you like your proposal to look like?

Wishbone rings have always been one of our most popular wedding ring styles, and the Orange Blossom version is a particular favourite.

The shape works beautifully alongside many engagement rings, giving a little more room around the setting while still sitting neatly alongside it.

This one is individually handmade in 18ct gold, with the Orange Blossom pattern hand-engraved around the band and a 2mm fair trade Canadian diamond set at the point.

If a standard wishbone shape isn’t quite right for your engagement ring, we can also make your wedding ring shaped to fit, following the contours of your existing ring so the two sit together perfectly.

The Orange Blossom design has been part of my collection for many years, and paired with the wishbone shape, it makes a lovely choice if you want a wedding ring with plenty of detail rather than a plain band.

Each one is made to order in my Cornwall studio.

If you are thinking about proposing at Christmas and commissioning a ring?

September might feel early, but if you want a ring designed and handmade by me for Christmas, this is the time to get in touch.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want; I can help with that. Some clients come with inspiration from a previous design of mine, which gives a starting point.

Share some details with us about your partner. The jewellery they already wear, whether they prefer yellow gold, white gold or platinum, the colours they’re drawn to and any clues they may have dropped about engagement rings.

From there, we can look at styles and gemstones. I have an extensive selection of unique sapphires and diamonds available, including some beautiful individual sapphires, or I can look at sourcing something specific if we don’t find the right one amongst those I have.

Once we’ve chosen the gemstone, we can work through the design together before I begin making the ring by hand here in Cornwall.

For a Christmas proposal, we would need to start as soon as possible. Bespoke commissions take time, particularly if I need to source a gemstone for you.

And if you’re worried because you don’t know their exact ring size, don’t let that stop you from starting the conversation.

If Christmas is when you’re planning to propose, get in touch now, and we can talk through where to begin.

When you’re thinking about a bespoke engagement ring, you don’t have to start with the ring design. You could start here.

These are three bicolour sapphires currently in my extensive gemstone collection, and each one could take a ring in a completely different direction.

You might be drawn immediately to one particular sapphire, or want to look through a few before you decide. Once we have the gemstone, we can start thinking about the ring around it: the metal, setting, whether you want to add diamonds and the overall style.

I often find that choosing the sapphire first makes those decisions much easier.

And if you’re planning a proposal over Christmas or New Year, now is the time to start thinking about your ring. A bespoke commission takes time.

These three are just a little inspiration.

You’ll probably recognise my Orange Blossom wedding ring by now, but you might not know that I also make it in 9ct yellow gold.

It has the same Orange Blossom pattern, hand-engraved around the full band with a fine milgrain border.

So if you’ve had your eye on Orange Blossom but have been looking specifically for a 9ct gold wedding ring, I can make one for you.

And of course, individually handmade to order in my Cornwall studio.
