30 years ago today saw the release of 'The Sound Gallery' on EMI. At the time it was a 'retro' release, but today the compilation is older than the music was in 1995! Should you wish to know more, I wrote an article for its 20th anniversary: https://paulsaiya.wordpress.com/2015/04/08/20-years-of-the-sound-gallery/
The actual complete album doesn't appear on YouTube or streaming services but many of the tracks are available in playlists - just search for 'Sound Gallery'!

If anyone saw the short interview on BBC World Business Report this morning about "Return of the CD" and the claim that sales are up for the first time since 2004, it is horses**t.
There was no source for any data to supply that headline. CD sales in the UK are already down on last year by 13.7% according to the Official Charts Company.
However, we still love the compact disc!

In a remarkable act of 'line extension', Universal Music have put out at least 21 different formats of Abba's new album 'Voyage' And here they are: 8 CDs, 6 cassettes and 7 vinyl records. And thanks to the shrinkwrap, a bu**er to photograph!

For those of you interested in early examples of music making with samplers then we have stumbled across an excellent South Bank Show documentary from 1982. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scmYG1Pv1_Q It follows Peter Gabriel constructing his fourth album and includes great footage of him at work in his studio playing with the classic Fairlight CMI computer, one of the first sampling set-up's which revolutionized music making in the 1980s. Or not, depending where you sit on the matter. Anyway, it also features Tony Levin explaning what a stick is and how he plays it so definitely worth 50 minutes of your time.

https://www.keymailrecords.com/asha-puthli-asha-puthli-sky-blue-vinyl-mrblp221 Hailing from Mumbai, India - singer, songwriter, producer and actor Asha Puthli is finally getting her cult 1970s albums for CBS reissued by UK based label Mr Bongo. Listen to her first album in full right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD4SKAQ7fFM&t=288s

Asha first came to prominence singing on Ornette Coleman's 1971 classic 'Science Fiction'. This lead to signing a solo deal with CBS in the UK who released this, her debut album. With covers of tunes by John Lennon, George Harrison, JJ Cale among others, luxuriate in the warm bass, sultry strings and of course Asha's gorgeous voice, all wrapped up with Del Newman's (Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Elton John) crisp production. This album is, THE s**t. Mr Bongo are about to reissue her third album 'The Devil Is Loose' and we trust more from her largely undiscovered catalogue. For lovers of rare fusion everywhere!

Yesterday (5th October) we had a send off for Sharon O'Neill who passed away peacefully on the 5th September after dealing with cancer for the past 12 months. A silent vigil on the beach at sunset quickly descended into a (socially distanced) knees-up which is what she would have wanted!

"Shaz" dragged our company, literally, kicking and screaming (that's me!) into the 21st Century with a fresh brand, new website and a positive outlook which we will maintain in her honour. We will keep your memory alive Shaz! X

https://www.keymailrecords.com/the-complete-cbs-recordings-1966-72-tremeloes-crsegbox071 There have been Tremeloes compilations before. However, ‘The Complete CBS Recordings 1966-72’ is unquestionably THE definitive anthology of one of the most successful British pop groups of the late Sixties. This 6-CD release features every note of the band’s recordings during their halcyon days with CBS. Tune into “Here Comes My Baby” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMy6PaZT7_g filmed for TV in 1967.

Originally fronted by Brian Poole, they were auditioned by Decca Records on the same day as the Beatles and it was The Tremeloes that got the prized record contract. They had their share of success including a No.1 single (“Do You Love Me?”). After Poole left in 1966, The Tremeloes carried on as a four piece and the following year had a second wave of popularity with hit singles “Here Comes My Baby”, “Even The Bad Times Are Good”, “Silence Is Golden”, “(Call Me) Number One”, all featured here along with highly-regarded psych-pop B-sides, criminally overlooked album tracks, alternative versions, outtakes, foreign language recordings, a live cabaret album and even the first-ever full release of the complete sessions for the 1970 cult movie ‘May Morning’. ‘The Complete CBS Recordings’ gathers everything under one roof for the first – and, almost certainly, the last time.

https://www.keymailrecords.com/keep-it-light-steven-adams-and-the-french-drops-fika082lp Former singer and songwriter with The Broken Family Band Steven Adams releases his second album with current band The French Drops called ‘Keep It Light’. The buoyant and relaxed mood can be heard across the album in its gloriously skipping tones, as it traverses across indie, pop, alt-rock and more tender acoustic and folk-leaning moments. Tune into “Bring On The Naps” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmN3DbOAitk

The album is one as full of joy and beauty as it is ink black humour and caustic revelation. On the gorgeous shuffle of “Oh Dear” - recalling the kind of stripped back beauty of Yo La Tengo at their finest - Adams sings: “and true love will not find you in the end.” A knowing nod and a wink to Daniel Johnston’s earnest refrain that indeed true love will find you in the end. It’s such moments that fill the album with equal parts weight and lightness, a smart touch delivered with a deft hand. Of the broad range of the album and its wide-spanning lyrical content Adams simply says: “the upbeat stuff is pretty upbeat and the darker stuff is pretty dark, but it’s all still with some humour...writing songs and making records keeps me sane.”

https://www.keymailrecords.com/play-with-fire-l-a-witch-ssq173lp American female psych/punk/garage band from Los Angeles release their second album ‘Play With Fire’. Where their self-titled album oozed with vibe and atmosphere, with the whole mix draped in reverb, sonically placing the band in some distant realm, broadcast across some unknown chasm of time. Tune into the rockin’ “I Wanna Lose” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7fmNtOSpT4

“‘Play With Fire’ is a suggestion to make things happen,” says vocalist/guitarist Sade Sanchez. “Don’t fear mistakes or the future. Take a chance. Say and do what you really feel, even if nobody agrees with your ideas. These are feelings that have stopped me in the past. I want to inspire others to be freethinkers even if it causes a little burn.” ‘Play With Fire’ is a bold new journey that retains L.A. Witch’s siren-song mystique, nostalgic spirit, and contemporary cool. Despite the stylistic breadth of the record, there is a unifying timbre across the album’s nine tracks, as if the trio of young musicians is bound together as a collective of old souls tapping into the sounds of their previous youth.

https://www.keymailrecords.com/even-in-exile-james-dean-bradfield-mrr001lp Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield releases his second solo album ‘Even In Exile’. Using the lyrics of Patrick Jones (James’ bandmate Nicky Wire’s brother) it is inspired by the story of Victor Jara, the Chilean poet-singer-activist who was tortured and killed during the early days of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Tune into “The Boy From The Plantation” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J22peh7IQOk

An ultra-vivid eulogy to a brilliant life cut short, ‘Even In Exile’ is a beautiful collection of songs that loosely traces Victor Jara’s story - at points pure and biographical, at others dreamlike and opaque, Bradfield sets Jones’ words written specifically for the project to some of the most addictive and affecting melodies he’s ever composed. James says “I’d known about him all my life. I knew the story, the tragedy, the political history – but I never really knew much about Victor Jara’s music. When I started listening to it two years ago, I was just stunned that his music could have such a tender and beautiful heart. I’m glad that in this day and age, I chose to write about someone like Victor – a person that wanted people to be together rather than apart.”

https://www.keymailrecords.com/peace-levellers-otflp31 Back with their first album of new material in eight years are British Folk-rockers The Levellers with their 11th record ‘Peace’ The band say that its 11 electrifying and relevant songs are a charged reaction to a world that seems to be teetering on the edge of madness and self-destruction. Tune into “Generation Fear” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZJsSttTniM

Produced at the band’s own Metway Studios by longtime collaborator Sean Lakeman, ‘Peace’ possesses the clarity and directness of early Levellers classics such as their 1990 debut album ‘A Weapon Called The Word’ and its landmark follow-up, ‘Levelling The Land’. The Levellers have always been outsiders, even during that brief period when they found themselves in the mainstream spotlight in the 1990s. The margins are where they belong, and it’s where they’re happiest. But being outsiders doesn’t mean irrelevance. In the 30 years since they announced themselves with ‘A Weapon Called The Word’, the Levellers have created their own self-sufficient world, one that includes everything from their studio to their own festival. The fire that fuelled them 30 years ago is far from being extinguished. With ‘Peace’, that fire burns brighter than ever.
