18th Century Dutch Decoration, on Chinese Porcelain from the reigns of : Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong.

Some of the porcelain was originally plain, some is decorated with Anhua, meaning it was lightly engraved before firing, one has Chinese under-glaze copper-red before being painted in the Netherlands. Some pieces have Chinese blue and white decoration with Anhua decoration before being enamelled in the Netherlands.

Het Loo Palace, Netherlands.

A Delftware bust, flanked by Kangxi blue and white porcelain.

Daniel Marot the Elder (1661–1752) was a French born architect, furniture designer, and engraver famous for his courtly Barque designs. He spent much of his life in the Netherlands and England.

During the Dutch Republic, Marot was employed by the Stadthouder, who later became William III of England. He is associated with designing interiors in the palace of Het Loo, from 1684 on.

In 1694, he traveled with William to London, where he was appointed one of his architects and Master of Works. In England his activities appear to have been concentrated at Hampton Court Palace, where he designed the garden parterres. However, some of the late 17th century displays at Hampton Court look very much like his work at Het Loo in my opinion.

The OCS is delighted to announce that this year’s AGM Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Roger King.

Professor King’s lecture will focus on his collection of approximately 120 ceramics spanning the late Song (960–1279), Yuan (1271–1368), and early Ming (1368–1644) dynasties. Throughout the lecture, some of the most important items will be showcased, including recent acquisitions—particularly blue-and-white and copper-red pieces. The discussion will also trace how the collection was first started back in the 1980s, as well as address some of the challenges faced by the speaker in building the collection.

Prof. Roger King has been a collector for nearly 40 years. He is Senior Advisor and Founding Director of the Roger King Center for Asian Family Business and Family Office at HKUST Business School, and is a world-leading expert in Family Business, Family Office, Entrepreneurship, and Corporate and Family Governance. Before his current role, he had a distinguished career spanning naval service, corporate leadership, and public advisory roles, including serving as a former US naval officer, Non-Executive Director of Orient Overseas (International) Limited, President of the Harvard School Association of Hong Kong, and Standing Committee Member of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

A Treasure from the Princessehof museum in Leeuwarden, Netherlands.

This rare jar comes from the Ming Interregnum. The Interregnum Period includes the Reigns of Zhengtong 1436-1449 Jingtai 1450-1456 and Tianshun 1457-1464. The first and last are the same emperor Zhu Qizhen, he came back to power but changed his title name from Zhengtong meaning Right Government to Tianshun meaning Obedient to Heaven. This period of Chinese porcelain has been overlooked until recently. New archeological excavations in China as well as new research has given us a far better understanding of the ceramics made in this period. I think this jar dates to c.1440-1460. Some years ago it might have just been dated to the 15th century. This piece is of exceptional quality and although unmarked is likely to be imperial.
