A new proposal being discussed in the UK could significantly change the future of fishkeeping.

This proposal centres on a ‘positive list’ system, in which only a limited number of approved species would be allowed to be kept, sold, or traded. While the intention is to improve animal welfare, there are growing concerns within the industry about the potential unintended consequences.

Industry experts, including the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), warn that this approach could:

• Restrict fishkeeping to a very small number of species
• Exclude many commonly kept fish simply due to a lack of available data, rather than any proven risk
• Create more welfare issues, rather than solving them

At present, there is no clear evidence that a positive list system would improve animal welfare outcomes.

This is an important moment for fishkeepers, hobbyists, and businesses to have their voices heard.

Our Cambridgeshire stores are looking for a new person to join the team!

This position includes working weekends and bank holidays, time will be split between our Scotsdale and Coton branch so must be able to travel to both locations.

40hr contract
starting rate is minimum wage
(Working weekends is a must)

The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in all areas of fish keeping, ideally some previous experience in fishkeeping. The role involves aiding in the day-to-day maintenance of the store including caring for the wide variety of livestock that we carry and serving customers. High standards of customer service are important to our business and applicants should be enthusiastic and professional.

The person we are looking for should be a positive practical individual who is keen to be part of a team as well as working independently.

As a Full-time sales assistant, the job will require the following;

· Deliver excellent standards of livestock care and store presentation.

· Greet all our customers in an articulate, approachable and friendly manner to maintain our high standards of customer care.

· Communicate your fishkeeping knowledge clearly to customers with varying levels of experience and maintain our policy of responsible fishkeeping.

· Work efficiently as part of a team in a fast-paced retail environment.

· Complete sales correctly and efficiently ensuring customers leave the store fully satisfied.

· Getting merchandise out onto the shop floor, organizing stock neatly on the shelves and making sure it's correctly priced and available.

· Be self-motivated, positive and organised.

· Be reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic to learn.

Please be advised that we do not support the idea of last-minute purchases of aquariums with fish as surprise gifts on Christmas Day.

Whilst we understand the intention to make the holiday special, it is of paramount importance to prioritise the well-being of the fish. We strongly recommend setting up any aquarium well in advance before introducing livestock. Likewise, it is important not to rush filling the aquarium with the maximum capacity of fish. While small aquariums can make great gifts, we would suggest allowing the recipient to set up the tank at their own pace and then consider adding livestock after Christmas.

Why not give a gift card as the perfect last-minute gift. It lets them come into store after the festivities to choose their fish, or upgrade their tank or pond with the equipment they really need, in store or online?
