SAINT NICU

'Twas the night before Christmas, in the neonatal intensive care,
all the babies were sleeping, while sounds of alarms filled the air.

The nurses making rounds, double-checking their meds,
while tucking the little babies, snug deep in their beds.

The ambu-bags were hung, by the preemies with care,
in hopes that they would all soon, be breathing room air.

When out in the hall, there arose such a clatter,
the parents came running, to see what was the matter.

Up from the desk, jumped all of the staff,
to make sure all was well, in each baby's Giraffe.

The respiratory therapist arrived on the double,
but the babies were all okay, on their oxygen and bubble.

The nurse practitioner was baffled, and exclaimed in a tiff,
"Is this really happening tonight? And on my THIRD shift?"

When what to their wondering eyes should appear?
But a man with a beard, who loved the babies so dear.

With a clipboard in hand, and a red stethoscope too,
they knew at that moment; he must be St. NICU.

He was dressed in red scrubs, from his tip to his toe,
and wearing surgical gloves, so the germs would not grow!

He was a jolly old fellow, with a few extra pounds,
but that didn't stop him, from making his rounds.

He saw babies in boxes, with tubes and with wires,
preemies and term infants, and their parent's desires-

To hold and to rock, to kiss and kangaroo;
they all had Christmas wishes, but only these few.

Snuggling the little one, he wrapped him so tight,
he handed the baby, to his mom with delight.

A smile arose from her mouth, with great joy,
for this was the moment, she dreamed of having, with her boy.

Visiting each baby, and their concerned parents too,
He knew right away, there was something special about the NICU.

Placing his hands, on each little head,
touching their foreheads, he winked, and he said:

"Tiny babies so strong, with determination and might,
so this is where you come, to live and to fight."

"To breathe and to grow, and to learn how to eat,
what a difficult journey, but such an amazing feat."

He had a sparkle in his eye, and a hop in his step,
as he approached the incubators, and whispered secrets he'd kept:

"Precious little babies, you are loved, so dear,
by your parents, your nurses, and ALL the staff here."

"Keep fighting the fight, and showing your power,
and you will grow stronger, with each passing hour."

Decorating the hallways, with ribbon and tape,
he strung lights on the warmers, the ventilators, and drapes.

He smiled and waved, as he passed by the cribs,
and left presents of pacifiers, and cute little bibs.

His mission was simple, to bring joy where there's sorrow,
and to remind all of the parents, of a brighter tomorrow.

This Christmas may be spent, behind the walls of the NICU,
but there's love to be found here, and precious miracles too!

He brought hope to the families, and smiles to the nurses,
as he flew by the monitors, and placed Purell in their purses.

And with a twinkle and a twirl, he disappeared out of sight,
But not before he exclaimed, "Merry Christmas to all" and "keep up the fight!"

❤️💜

If you have delivered via c-section, please read. I know this is something that I still struggle with sometimes. Feeling so let down, terrified but also so thankful is hard. But it also such a truly amazing thing.

April is C-section Awareness Month.

C-section Mama,
â €
Let me remind you how powerful you are.
How you birthed life.
How because of you and what you’ve been through, someone’s adventure has begun.
You were the beginning and you always will be.
â €
Let me remind you that birthing this way isn’t the “easier option”. And those who think that don’t know.
â €
They don’t know what it’s like to have layers of flesh and muscle cut through as you lie on a surgery bed, with many unfamiliar faces around you.
â €
They don’t know what it’s like to have a sheet in front of you and your partner beside you, as you wait for the sound of your babies crying.
â €
They don’t know what it’s like to be left in such physical pain. The exhaustion seems nothing compared to the cut on your lower stomach. And that pain doesn’t immediately dissolve with the immense love you feel for your babies. It hurts to move for weeks, sometimes longer.
â €
They don’t know what it’s like to process a different birth than what you imagined, or mourn what you may have dreamt about for months. To learn to let go of what wasn’t, or couldn’t have been.
â €
They don’t know what it’s like to deal with others who don’t understand your elective choice, and who do nothing but add to the stigma of birthing this way.
â €
They don’t know what it’s like to see their scar and be reminded every day that their birth was different to what many in the world think it “should” look like.
â €
They don’t know.
â €
But C-section Mama,
You and those who have walked this sort of birth story know.
â €
You know what it takes. What you went through. The details of your birth story.
â €
You know exactly what that scar represents, what power it shows and how beautiful it is.
â €
You know how endless your love for your babies is no matter how they came into the world.
â €
But please know just how worthy you are.
And that it’s not just you who thinks that.
â €
Birth is birth,
No matter how it happened.
â €
Birth is the gateway.
And no matter what,
It started with you.

💬 “I produced this piece of artwork of my daughter looking into a mirror because I wanted to capture the essence of the 'Invisible' load of living with type 1 diabetes. You can half see her and half not, likewise her Dexcom CGM device on her tummy, its half visible, but you have to look rather carefully to see it, and that in essence is how I view T1D. The invisible illness, living with something that others can’t always see. Battling an invisible condition every single day for life.

“Children with Type 1 diabetes are fiercely resilient and courageous, that doesn't mean they don't sometimes harbour resentful feelings regarding their condition, and I wanted my poem to capture the vulnerability of children living with T1d as well as their ability to show strength in the face of adversity and living with a chronic condition.”

❗ We know that , which is why we took artwork like Lindsey’s to Parliament in April – to show the Government what living with diabetes is really like.

It was brilliant to speak to over 100 MPs about what they can do to support people with diabetes, but the hard work doesn't stop there. This (13-19 June), we're calling on you to help us make sure the voices of people with diabetes are heard.

We are the . We’re a community, and this is our diabetes. There are 4.9 million people living with diabetes, and every one of us matters. 💙
